The LORD passed by before him and proclaimed:“ The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, and abounding in loyal love and faithfulness,keeping loyal love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin. But he by no means leaves the guilty unpunished, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children and children’s children, to the third and fourth generation.”

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters! Let every person be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger.

They refused to obey and did not recall your miracles that you had performed among them. Instead, they rebelled and appointed a leader to return to their bondage in Egypt. But you are a God of forgiveness, merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and unfailing in your loyal love. You did not abandon them,

‘ The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in loyal love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children until the third and fourth generations.’

For look, the LORD comes with fire, his chariots come like a windstorm, to reveal his raging anger, his battle cry, and his flaming arrows.

Then the LORD will appear above them, and his arrow will shoot forth like lightning; the Lord GOD will blow the trumpet and will sally forth on the southern storm winds.

Here is a message about Egypt: Look, the Lord rides on a swift- moving cloud and approaches Egypt. The idols of Egypt tremble before him; the Egyptians lose their courage.

The LORD said,“ Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD. Look, the LORD is ready to pass by.” A very powerful wind went before the LORD, digging into the mountain and causing landslides, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the windstorm there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.After the earthquake, there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a soft whisper.When Elijah heard it, he covered his face with his robe and went out and stood at the entrance to the cave. All of a sudden a voice asked him,“ Why are you here, Elijah?”

Jesus said to him,“ You have said it yourself. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

On the third day in the morning there was thunder and lightning and a dense cloud on the mountain, and the sound of a very loud horn; all the people who were in the camp trembled.Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their place at the foot of the mountain.Now Mount Sinai was completely covered with smoke because the LORD had descended on it in fire, and its smoke went up like the smoke of a great furnace, and the whole mountain shook violently.

God has declared one principle; two principles I have heard: God is strong,

The earth heaved and shook; the roots of the mountains trembled; they heaved because he was angry.Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals.He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet.He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind.He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds.From the brightness in front of him came hail and fiery coals.The LORD thundered in the sky; the sovereign One shouted.He shot his arrows and scattered them, many lightning bolts and routed them.The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by your battle cry, LORD, by the powerful breath from your nose.

Say to God:“ How awesome are your deeds! Because of your great power your enemies cower in fear before you.

Our God approaches and is not silent; consuming fire goes ahead of him and all around him a storm rages.

and what is the incomparable greatness of his power toward us who believe, as displayed in the exercise of his immense strength.This power he exercised in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms

The LORD said these things to your entire assembly at the mountain from the middle of the fire, the cloud, and the darkness with a loud voice, and that was all he said. Then he inscribed the words on two stone tablets and gave them to me.Then, when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness while the mountain was ablaze, all your tribal leaders and elders approached me.You said,“ The LORD our God has shown us his great glory and we have heard him speak from the middle of the fire. It is now clear to us that God can speak to human beings and they can keep on living.

He prayed to the LORD and said,“ Oh, LORD, this is just what I thought would happen when I was in my own country. This is what I tried to prevent by attempting to escape to Tarshish!– because I knew that you are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in mercy, and one who relents concerning threatened judgment.

I was watching in the night visions,“ And with the clouds of the sky one like a son of man was approaching. He went up to the Ancient of Days and was escorted before him.

( Look! He is returning with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all the tribes on the earth will mourn because of him. This will certainly come to pass! Amen.)

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind:

If I sinned, then you would watch me and you would not acquit me of my iniquity.

Plague goes before him; pestilence marches right behind him.He takes his battle position and shakes the earth; with a mere look he frightens the nations. The ancient mountains disintegrate; the primeval hills are flattened. He travels on the ancient roads.I see the tents of Cushan overwhelmed by trouble; the tent curtains of the land of Midian are shaking.Is the LORD mad at the rivers? Are you angry with the rivers? Are you enraged at the sea? Is this why you climb into your horse-drawn chariots, your victorious chariots?Your bow is ready for action; you commission your arrows. Selah. You cause flash floods on the earth’s surface.When the mountains see you, they shake. The torrential downpour sweeps through. The great deep shouts out; it lifts its hands high.The sun and moon stand still in their courses; the flash of your arrows drives them away, the bright light of your lightning-quick spear.You furiously stomp on the earth, you angrily trample down the nations.You march out to deliver your people, to deliver your special servant. You strike the leader of the wicked nation, laying him open from the lower body to the neck. Selah.You pierce the heads of his warriors with a spear. They storm forward to scatter us; they shout with joy as if they were plundering the poor with no opposition.But you trample on the sea with your horses, on the surging, raging waters.

Return to the LORD your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to anger and boundless in loyal love– often relenting from calamitous punishment.
