耶穌謂之曰、以利亞必先至、振興諸事、而經指人子何所載、蓋載人子必多受苦、為人所侮、

答曰：『伊理靄固需先來振興萬事、然經不亦言人子應如何備嘗苦辱乎？

Jesus replied,“ To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected?

Jesus replied,“ That’s right. Elijah does come first. He makes all things new again. So why is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and not be accepted?

And he said to them,“ Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

Jesus responded,“ Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready. Yet why do the Scriptures say that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be treated with utter contempt?

“ Elijah does come first and restores all things,” he replied.“ Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

And He said to them,“ Elijah does come first and he restores all things. And yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

Then He answered and told them,“ Indeed, Elijah is coming first and restores all things. And how is it written concerning the Son of Man, that He must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

And he said unto them, Elijah indeed cometh first, and restoreth all things: and how is it written of the Son of man, that he should suffer many things and be set at nought?

And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought.

Who has believed what we have heard? And who has the arm of the Lord been revealed to?He grew up before Him like a young plant and like a root out of dry ground. He didn’t have an impressive form or majesty that we should look at Him, no appearance that we should desire Him.He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; He was despised, and we didn’t value Him.Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.But He was pierced because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds.We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished Him for the iniquity of us all.He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, He did not open His mouth.He was taken away because of oppression and judgment; and who considered His fate? For He was cut off from the land of the living; He was struck because of my people’s rebellion.They made His grave with the wicked and with a rich man at His death, although He had done no violence and had not spoken deceitfully.Yet the Lord was pleased to crush Him severely. When You make Him a restitution offering, He will see His seed, He will prolong His days, and by His hand, the Lord’s pleasure will be accomplished.He will see it out of His anguish, and He will be satisfied with His knowledge. My righteous Servant will justify many, and He will carry their iniquities.Therefore I will give Him the many as a portion, and He will receive the mighty as spoil, because He submitted Himself to death, and was counted among the rebels; yet He bore the sin of many and interceded for the rebels.

I gave My back to those who beat Me, and My cheeks to those who tore out My beard. I did not hide My face from scorn and spitting.

Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt, mocked Him, dressed Him in a brilliant robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.

This is what the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, says to one who is despised, to one abhorred by people, to a servant of rulers:“ Kings will see and stand up, and princes will bow down, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel— and He has chosen you.”

Just as many were appalled at You— His appearance was so disfigured that He did not look like a man, and His form did not resemble a human being—

He will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God.And he will go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.

Sword, awake against My shepherd, against the man who is My associate— this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts. Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will also turn My hand against the little ones.

Save me, God, for the water has risen to my neck.I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing; I have come into deep waters, and a flood sweeps over me.I am weary from my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head; my deceitful enemies, who would destroy me, are powerful. Though I did not steal, I must repay.God, You know my foolishness, and my guilty acts are not hidden from You.Do not let those who put their hope in You be disgraced because of me, Lord God of Hosts; do not let those who seek You be humiliated because of me, God of Israel.For I have endured insults because of You, and shame has covered my face.I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother’s sonsbecause zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult You have fallen on me.I mourned and fasted, but it brought me insults.I wore sackcloth as my clothing, and I was a joke to them.Those who sit at the city gate talk about me, and drunkards make up songs about me.But as for me, Lord, my prayer to You is for a time of favor. In Your abundant, faithful love, God, answer me with Your sure salvation.Rescue me from the miry mud; don’t let me sink. Let me be rescued from those who hate me and from the deep waters.Don’t let the floodwaters sweep over me or the deep swallow me up; don’t let the Pit close its mouth over me.Answer me, Lord, for Your faithful love is good; in keeping with Your great compassion, turn to me.Don’t hide Your face from Your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me quickly!Draw near to me and redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies.You know the insults I endure— my shame and disgrace. You are aware of all my adversaries.Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I waited for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters, but found no one.Instead, they gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.Let their table set before them be a snare, and let it be a trap for their allies.Let their eyes grow too dim to see, and let their loins continually shake.Pour out Your rage on them, and let Your burning anger overtake them.Make their fortification desolate; may no one live in their tents.For they persecute the one You struck and talk about the pain of those You wounded.Add guilt to their guilt; do not let them share in Your righteousness.Let them be erased from the book of life and not be recorded with the righteous.But as for me— poor and in pain— let Your salvation protect me, God.I will praise God’s name with song and exalt Him with thanksgiving.That will please Yahweh more than an ox, more than a bull with horns and hooves.The humble will see it and rejoice. You who seek God, take heart!For the Lord listens to the needy and does not despise His own who are prisoners.Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and everything that moves in them,for God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah. They will live there and possess it.The descendants of His servants will inherit it, and those who love His name will live in it.

And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers. Otherwise, I will come and strike the land with a curse.”

A voice of one crying out: Prepare the way of the Lord in the wilderness; make a straight highway for our God in the desert.Every valley will be lifted up, and every mountain and hill will be leveled; the uneven ground will become smooth and the rough places, a plain.And the glory of the Lord will appear, and all humanity together will see it, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Wilderness of Judeaand saying,“ Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near!”For he is the one spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, who said: A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; make His paths straight!John himself had a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.Then people from Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the vicinity of the Jordan were flocking to him,and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to the place of his baptism, he said to them,“ Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance.And don’t presume to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones!Even now the ax is ready to strike the root of the trees! Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.“ I baptize you with water for repentance, but the One who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove His sandals. He Himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.His winnowing shovel is in His hand, and He will clear His threshing floor and gather His wheat into the barn. But the chaff He will burn up with fire that never goes out.”

My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Why are You so far from my deliverance and from my words of groaning?My God, I cry by day, but You do not answer, by night, yet I have no rest.But You are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.Our fathers trusted in You; they trusted, and You rescued them.They cried to You and were set free; they trusted in You and were not disgraced.But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by people.Everyone who sees me mocks me; they sneer and shake their heads:“ He relies on the Lord; let Him rescue him; let the Lord deliver him, since He takes pleasure in him.”You took me from the womb, making me secure while at my mother’s breast.I was given over to You at birth; You have been my God from my mother’s womb.Do not be far from me, because distress is near and there is no one to help.Many bulls surround me; strong ones of Bashan encircle me.They open their mouths against me— lions, mauling and roaring.I am poured out like water, and all my bones are disjointed; my heart is like wax, melting within me.My strength is dried up like baked clay; my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You put me into the dust of death.For dogs have surrounded me; a gang of evildoers has closed in on me; they pierced my hands and my feet.I can count all my bones; people look and stare at me.They divided my garments among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing.But You, Lord, don’t be far away. My strength, come quickly to help me.Deliver my life from the sword, my only life from the power of these dogs.Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen.I will proclaim Your name to my brothers; I will praise You in the congregation.You who fear Yahweh, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor Him! All you descendants of Israel, revere Him!For He has not despised or detested the torment of the afflicted. He did not hide His face from him but listened when he cried to Him for help.I will give praise in the great congregation because of You; I will fulfill my vows before those who fear You.The humble will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the Lord will praise Him. May your hearts live forever!All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord. All the families of the nations will bow down before You,for kingship belongs to the Lord; He rules over the nations.All who prosper on earth will eat and bow down; all those who go down to the dust will kneel before Him— even the one who cannot preserve his life.Their descendants will serve Him; the next generation will be told about the Lord.They will come and tell a people yet to be born about His righteousness— what He has done.

The Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

And child, you will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare His ways,

Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city— to bring the rebellion to an end, to put a stop to sin, to wipe away iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place.Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince will be seven weeks and 62 weeks. It will be rebuilt with a plaza and a moat, but in difficult times.After those 62 weeks the Messiah will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the coming prince will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come with a flood, and until the end there will be war; desolations are decreed.

Instead He emptied Himself by assuming the form of a slave, taking on the likeness of men. And when He had come as a man in His external form,He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death— even to death on a cross.

Then one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at Him:“ Aren’t You the Messiah? Save Yourself and us!”

As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Look, I am sending My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way.A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; make His paths straight!John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were flocking to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.John wore a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.He was preaching:“ Someone more powerful than I will come after me. I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of His sandals.I have baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

From then on Jesus began to point out to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.

There was a man named John who was sent from God.He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.The true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.He was in the world, and the world was created through Him, yet the world did not recognize Him.He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him.But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name,who were born, not of blood, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.( John testified concerning Him and exclaimed,“ This was the One of whom I said,‘ The One coming after me has surpassed me, because He existed before me.’”)Indeed, we have all received grace after grace from His fullness,for the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.No one has ever seen God. The One and Only Son— the One who is at the Father’s side— He has revealed Him.This is John’s testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him,“ Who are you?”He did not refuse to answer, but he declared:“ I am not the Messiah.”“ What then?” they asked him.“ Are you Elijah?”“ I am not,” he said.“ Are you the Prophet?”“ No,” he answered.“ Who are you, then?” they asked.“ We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself?”He said,“ I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord— just as Isaiah the prophet said.”Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.So they asked him,“ Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?”“ I baptize with water,” John answered them.“ Someone stands among you, but you don’t know Him.He is the One coming after me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.”All this happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,“ Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!This is the One I told you about:‘ After me comes a man who has surpassed me, because He existed before me.’I didn’t know Him, but I came baptizing with water so He might be revealed to Israel.”And John testified,“ I watched the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He rested on Him.I didn’t know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water told me,‘ The One you see the Spirit descending and resting on— He is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’I have seen and testified that He is the Son of God!”Again the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples.When he saw Jesus passing by, he said,“ Look! The Lamb of God!”

Rise up, God, defend Your cause! Remember the insults that fools bring against You all day long.

When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent a message by his disciplesand asked Him,“ Are You the One who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”Jesus replied to them,“ Go and report to John what you hear and see:the blind see, the lame walk, those with skin diseases are healed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor are told the good news.And if anyone is not offended because of Me, he is blessed.”As these men went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John:“ What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? Look, those who wear soft clothes are in kings’ palaces.But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and far more than a prophet.This is the one it is written about: Look, I am sending My messenger ahead of You; he will prepare Your way before You.“ I assure you: Among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has appeared, but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been suffering violence, and the violent have been seizing it by force.For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John;if you’re willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who is to come.Anyone who has ears should listen!“ To what should I compare this generation? It’s like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to each other:We played the flute for you, but you didn’t dance; we sang a lament, but you didn’t mourn!For John did not come eating or drinking, and they say,‘ He has a demon!’

during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, God’s word came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.He went into all the vicinity of the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah: A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; make His paths straight!Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be made low; the crooked will become straight, the rough ways smooth,and everyone will see the salvation of God.

John responded,“ No one can receive a single thing unless it’s given to him from heaven.You yourselves can testify that I said,‘ I am not the Messiah, but I’ve been sent ahead of Him.’He who has the bride is the groom. But the groom’s friend, who stands by and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the groom’s voice. So this joy of mine is complete.He must increase, but I must decrease.”

“ Throw it to the potter,” the Lord said to me— this magnificent price I was valued by them. So I took the 30 pieces of silver and threw it into the house of the Lord, to the potter.
