So the Pharisees and the teachers of the law questioned Jesus.“ Why don’t your disciples live by what the elders teach?” they asked.“ Why do they eat their food with‘ unclean’ hands?”

乃問耶穌曰、爾門徒不依古人遺傳、以俗手而食、何也、

於是、𠵽唎㘔人、士子、問耶穌曰、爾門徒不遵古人遺傳、手未盥而食、何也、

於是法利賽人及經士問耶穌曰、爾門徒何不遵古人遺傳、手未盥即食乎、

故法利塞人及經生質耶穌曰：『爾徒不遵古人遺規、而以俗手取食何也？』

So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus,“ Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”

And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him,“ Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?”

So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples follow our age old tradition? They eat without first performing the hand washing ceremony.”

So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders, instead of eating bread with ceremonially unclean hands?”

And the Pharisees and the scribes* asked Him,“ Why do Your disciples not walk in accordance with the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unholy hands?”

Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him,“ Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”

And the Pharisees and the scribes ask him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with defiled hands?

Then the Pharisees and the scribes asked Him,“ Why don’t Your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders, instead of eating bread with ritually unclean hands?”

Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?

The Pharisees and the experts in the law asked him,“ Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with unwashed hands?”

The Pharisees and the scribes asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unwashed hands?”

They saw some of his disciples eating food with“ unclean” hands. That means they were not washed.The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands to make them“ clean.” That’s what the elders teach.

“ Why don’t your disciples obey what the elders teach? Your disciples don’t wash their hands before they eat!”

Brothers and sisters, here is a command we give you. We give it in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Keep away from every believer who doesn’t want to work and makes trouble. Keep away from any believer who doesn’t live up to the teaching you received from us.

They have been told that you teach Jews to turn away from the Law of Moses. You teach this to the Jews who live among the Gentiles. They think that you teach those Jews not to circumcise their children. They think that you teach them to give up our Jewish ways.

Take them with you. Join them in the Jewish practice that makes people pure and‘ clean.’ Pay their expenses so they can have their heads shaved. Then everyone will know that these reports about you are not true in any way. They will know that you yourself obey the law.

I was moving ahead in my Jewish way of life. I went beyond many of my people who were my own age. I held firmly to the teachings passed down by my people.

We hear that some people among you don’t want to work and are making trouble. They aren’t really busy. Instead, they are bothering others.

Some teachers of the law who were Pharisees were there. They saw Jesus eating with sinners and tax collectors. So they asked his disciples,“ Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”Jesus heard that. So he said to them,“ Those who are healthy don’t need a doctor. Sick people do. I have not come to get those who think they are right with God to follow me. I have come to get sinners to follow me.”John’s disciples and the Pharisees were going without eating. Some people came to Jesus. They said to him,“ John’s disciples are fasting. The disciples of the Pharisees are also fasting. But your disciples are not. Why aren’t they?”

And Abraham is also the father of those who are circumcised and believe. So just being circumcised is not enough. Those who are circumcised must also follow the steps of our father Abraham. He had faith before he was circumcised.
