Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah.

旁立者有人聞之曰、彼呼以利亞也、

旁立者聞之、有曰、彼呼以利亞也、

旁立者聞之、以為呼伊理藹也。

When some of those standing near heard this, they said,“ Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”

Some of those standing nearby heard Jesus cry out. They said,“ Listen! He’s calling for Elijah.”

And some of the bystanders hearing it said,“ Behold, he is calling Elijah.”

When some of those standing there heard this, they said,“ See, he’s calling for Elijah.”

And when some of the bystanders heard Him, they began saying,“ Look! He is calling for Elijah!”

Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said,“ Look, He is calling for Elijah!”

And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elijah.

When some of those standing there heard this, they said,“ Look, He’s calling for Elijah!”

And some of them that stood by, when they heard[ it], said, Behold, he calleth Elias.

When some of the bystanders heard it they said,“ Listen, he is calling for Elijah!”

Some of those who stood by, when they heard it, said,“ Behold, he is calling Elijah.”

Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah.One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink.But the rest said,“ Wait! Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.”

Then they asked him,“ Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes?”Jesus responded,“ Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready. Yet why do the Scriptures say that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be treated with utter contempt?But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they chose to abuse him, just as the Scriptures predicted.”

Jesus replied,“ Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready.But I tell you, Elijah has already come, but he wasn’t recognized, and they chose to abuse him. And in the same way they will also make the Son of Man suffer.”Then the disciples realized he was talking about John the Baptist.
