我們如果忍耐，就將與他一同做王；我們如果不認他，他也將不認我們。我們如果不信實，他仍然是信實的，因為他不能否定自己。

西門彼得問：「主啊，你要到哪裡去呢？」耶穌回答：「我去的地方，你現在不能跟著去，但以後會跟著去。」彼得說：「主啊，為什麼我現在就不能跟隨你呢？為了你，我願意捨棄自己的生命！」耶穌回答：「你願意為我捨命嗎？我確確實實地告訴你：雞叫以前，你必定三次不認我。

他出去到門口，另有一個女僕看見他，對那裡的人說：「這個人與拿撒勒人耶穌是一夥的。」彼得又起誓否認說：「我不認識那個人！」

彼得對耶穌說：「即使所有的人被絆倒，我還是不會。」可是耶穌對他說：「我確實地告訴你：今天，就在今夜，雞叫兩遍以前，你會三次不認我。」彼得卻堅決地說：「就算我必須與你同死，我也絕不會不認你。」所有的門徒也都這麼說。

立時，雞叫了第二遍。彼得想起耶穌對他說過的話：「雞叫兩遍以前，你會三次不認我」，他就忍不住痛哭起來。
