And in his teaching he said, Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and to have salutations in the marketplaces,

He also said in His teaching,“ Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes, and who want greetings in the marketplaces,

And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and[ love] salutations in the marketplaces,

In his teaching Jesus also said,“ Watch out for the experts in the law. They like walking around in long robes and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces,

In his teaching he said to them,“ Beware of the scribes, who like to walk in long robes, and to get greetings in the marketplaces,

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,“ The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees are the official interpreters of the law of Moses.So practice and obey whatever they tell you, but don’t follow their example. For they don’t practice what they teach.They crush people with unbearable religious demands and never lift a finger to ease the burden.“ Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels.And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues.They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called‘ Rabbi.’

“ What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you love to sit in the seats of honor in the synagogues and receive respectful greetings as you walk in the marketplaces.

Then, with the crowds listening, he turned to his disciples and said,“ Beware of these teachers of religious law! For they like to parade around in flowing robes and love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces. And how they love the seats of honor in the synagogues and the head table at banquets.Yet they shamelessly cheat widows out of their property and then pretend to be pious by making long prayers in public. Because of this, they will be severely punished.”

“ When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get.

He taught them by telling many stories in the form of parables, such as this one:

But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues.

When Jesus noticed that all who had come to the dinner were trying to sit in the seats of honor near the head of the table, he gave them this advice:“ When you are invited to a wedding feast, don’t sit in the seat of honor. What if someone who is more distinguished than you has also been invited?The host will come and say,‘ Give this person your seat.’ Then you will be embarrassed, and you will have to take whatever seat is left at the foot of the table!“ Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you, he will come and say,‘ Friend, we have a better place for you!’ Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests.For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
