耶穌諭眾及門徒曰：『經生與法利塞人、居於摩西之位、爾等固應遵其所言、惟不可效其所行；蓋若輩有言而無行也。彼以煩重難堪之任縛置人肩、而己則不運一指以相助。凡彼所行、惟欲求知於人；廣其佩經、長其綴旒、宴則首座、會則高居、又喜受敬市中、呼為「辣比。」

哀哉法利塞！蓋爾於會堂喜居首席、於市衢樂受人敬也。

眾方聆訓、耶穌諭其諸徒曰：『尚其慎旃！毋效一般經生好長服以遊行、樂於市上受人致敬、會必高居、席必首座、凌占孤寒之產、而以長禱為矯飾之具、此輩之受譴、必有異乎尋常者焉。』

爾祈禱時、亦勿效虛偽之徒；蓋若輩喜立於堂中街頭、而作祈禱、故令人見。吾實語爾、彼已獲其報矣。

耶穌多方設譬而誨之曰：

謹防世人、人將送爾於公會、撻爾於會堂、

時耶穌見被邀之客、紛紛自占上座、乃曉喻之曰：『爾赴婚筵、勿登首座、誠恐客中有尊於爾者、主人請爾讓位、則赧然而就末座矣。是故、爾被邀時、宜自居末座、主人至、乃曰：「吾友、請升、」爾則見榮於同席之前矣。蓋自尊者必見抑、而自謙者必見升也。』
