司祭長及法利塞人既聞其喻知指彼等而言也；欲執之、而懾於民情；蓋眾皆奉彼為先知也。

『吾儕若曰自天、彼將問我何以不信；若曰自人、民又可畏、蓋眾皆以如望為先知也。』

若云自人、又恐犯眾怒、而遭石擊、蓋眾皆確信如望之為先知也。』
