耶穌說：「撒但，退去！因為經上記着：『要拜主－你的神，惟獨事奉他。』」於是，魔鬼離開了耶穌，立刻有天使來伺候他。

他躺在羅騰樹下睡着了。看哪，有一個天使拍他，對他說：「起來吃吧！」他觀看，看哪，頭旁有燒熱的石頭烤的餅和一壺水，他就吃了喝了，又再躺下。耶和華的使者回來，第二次拍他，說：「起來吃吧！因為你要走的路很遠。」他就起來吃了喝了，仗着這飲食的力走了四十晝夜，到了神的山，就是何烈山。

敬虔的奧祕是公認為偉大的：神在肉身顯現，被聖靈稱義，被天使看見，被傳於外邦，被世人信服，被接在榮耀裏。

因為你們所犯的一切罪，做了耶和華眼中看為惡的事，惹他發怒，我就像從前一樣俯伏在耶和華面前四十晝夜，沒有吃飯，沒有喝水。

「我因耶和華說要除滅你們，就在耶和華面前俯伏四十晝夜，像我以前俯伏一樣。
