The tempter came to him. He said,“ If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

試者就之曰、爾若天主之子、可令此石變餅、

誘者乃進而謂之曰：『爾苟為天主子、盍命斯石變餅。』

The tempter came to him and said,“ If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

And the tempter came and said to him,“ If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

During that time the devil came and said to him,“ If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.”

Then the tempter approached him and said,“ If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

And the tempter came and said to Him,“ If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

Now when the tempter came to Him, he said,“ If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

And the tempter came and said unto him, If thou art the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.

Then the tempter approached Him and said,“ If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

The tempter came and said to him,“ If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.”

Some people with them began to wish for other food. Again the Israelites began to cry out. They said,“ We wish we had meat to eat.We remember the fish we ate in Egypt. It didn’t cost us anything. We also remember the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.But now we’ve lost all interest in eating. We never see anything but this manna!”

That’s the reason I sent someone to find out about your faith. I couldn’t wait any longer. I was afraid that Satan had tempted you in some way. Then our work among you would have been useless.

The serpent was more clever than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. The serpent said to the woman,“ Did God really say,‘ You must not eat fruit from any tree in the garden’?”The woman said to the serpent,“ We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden.But God did say,‘ You must not eat the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden. Do not even touch it. If you do, you will die.’ ”“ You will certainly not die,” the serpent said to the woman.“ God knows that when you eat fruit from that tree, you will know things you have never known before. Like God, you will be able to tell the difference between good and evil.”

Satan replied,“ A man will give everything he has to save himself. So Job is willing to give up the lives of his family to save his own life.But now reach out your hand and strike his flesh and bones. Then I’m sure he will speak evil things against you. In fact, he’ll do it right in front of you.”The Lord said to Satan,“ All right. I am handing him over to you. But you must spare his life.”Then Satan left the Lord and went on his way. He sent painful sores on Job. They covered him from the bottom of his feet to the top of his head.

“ Simon, Simon! Satan has asked to sift all of you disciples like wheat.But I have prayed for you, Simon. I have prayed that your faith will not fail. When you have turned back, help your brothers to be strong.”

Don’t be afraid of what you are going to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you. You will be treated badly for ten days. Be faithful, even if it means you must die. Then I will give you life as your crown of victory.

The great dragon was thrown down to the earth, and his angels with him. The dragon is that old serpent called the devil, or Satan. He leads the whole world astray.Then I heard a loud voice in heaven. It said,“ Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God have come. The authority of his Messiah has come. Satan, who brings charges against our brothers and sisters, has been thrown down. He brings charges against them in front of our God day and night.They had victory over him by the blood the Lamb spilled for them. They had victory over him by speaking the truth about Jesus to others. They were willing to risk their lives, even if it led to death.

But they continued to sin against him. In the desert they refused to obey the Most High God.They were stubborn and tested God. They ordered him to give them the food they wanted.They spoke against God. They said,“ Can God really put food on a table in the desert?It is true that he struck the rock, and streams of water poured out. Huge amounts of water flowed down. But can he also give us bread? Can he supply meat for his people?”

“ You always give Job everything he needs,” Satan replied.“ That’s why he has respect for you.Haven’t you guarded him and his family? Haven’t you taken care of everything he has? You have blessed everything he does. His flocks and herds are spread all through the land.But now reach out your hand and strike down everything he has. Then I’m sure he will speak evil things against you. In fact, he’ll do it right in front of you.”The Lord said to Satan,“ All right. I am handing everything he has over to you. But do not touch the man himself.” Then Satan left the Lord and went on his way.

The Israelites said to them,“ We wish the Lord had put us to death in Egypt. There we sat around pots of meat. We ate all the food we wanted. But you have brought us out into this desert. You must want this entire community to die of hunger.”

One day Jacob was cooking some stew. Esau came in from the open country. He was very hungry.He said to Jacob,“ Quick! I’m very hungry! Let me have some of that red stew!” That’s why he was also named Edom.Jacob replied,“ First sell me the rights that belong to you as the oldest son in the family.”“ Look, I’m dying of hunger,” Esau said.“ What good are those rights to me?”But Jacob said,“ First promise to sell me your rights.” So Esau promised to do it. He sold Jacob all the rights that belonged to him as the oldest son.Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. Esau ate and drank. Then he got up and left. So Esau didn’t value the rights that belonged to him as the oldest son.

Then those in the boat worshiped Jesus. They said,“ You really are the Son of God!”

See to it that no one commits sexual sins. See to it that no one is godless like Esau. He sold the rights to what he would receive as the oldest son. He sold them for a single meal.

Then the devil led Jesus to Jerusalem. He had Jesus stand on the highest point of the temple.“ If you are the Son of God,” he said,“ throw yourself down from here.

Right away he began to preach in the synagogues. He taught that Jesus is the Son of God.

A voice from heaven said,“ This is my Son, and I love him. I am very pleased with him.”

The devil said to him,“ If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
