The disciples said to him,“ If this is the case of a husband with a wife, it is better not to marry!”

Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do. (niv)

Because of the present crisis, I think that it is good for a man to remain as he is.Are you pledged to a woman? Do not seek to be released. Are you free from such a commitment? Do not look for a wife.But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this. Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and nagging wife. (niv)

As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry.Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge.Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies who talk nonsense, saying things they ought not to.So I counsel younger widows to marry, to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander.Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan. Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well.Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares?Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers.May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.A loving doe, a graceful deer— may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love. A foolish child is a father’s ruin, and a quarrelsome wife is like the constant dripping of a leaky roof.Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the Lord. (niv)

A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord.In my judgment, she is happier if she stays as she is— and I think that I too have the Spirit of God. (niv)

I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs— how he can please the Lord.But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world— how he can please his wife—and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world— how she can please her husband.I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.
