He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished.He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. (niv)

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. (niv)

then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. (niv)

You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you.You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. (niv)

King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying,“ John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”Others said,“ He is Elijah.” And still others claimed,“ He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago.”But when Herod heard this, he said,“ John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married.For John had been saying to Herod,“ It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to,because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him.Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl,“ Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.”And he promised her with an oath,“ Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”She went out and said to her mother,“ What shall I ask for?”“ The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request:“ I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her.So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison,and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. (niv)

Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.As John was completing his work, he said:‘ Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for. But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’“ Fellow children of Abraham and you God- fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent.The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. (niv)

Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.And he said,“ The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”Then he said to them all:“ Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him.“ By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked.“ And who gave you this authority?”Jesus replied,“ I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.John’s baptism— where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?” They discussed it among themselves and said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’ (niv)

There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is true.“ You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth.Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved.John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.“ I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish— the very works that I am doing— testify that the Father has sent me. (niv)

But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done,Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison. (niv)

When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples (niv)

He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. (niv)

John’s baptism— was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”They discussed it among themselves and said,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will ask,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’But if we say,‘ Of human origin’…”( They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.) (niv)

For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him. (niv)

This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. (niv)

Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him— (niv)

Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,for John had been saying to him:“ It is not lawful for you to have her.”Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so muchthat he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.Prompted by her mother, she said,“ Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be grantedand had John beheaded in the prison. (niv)

For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say,‘ He has a demon.’ (niv)

Jesus replied,“ To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected?But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.” (niv)

Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.This is the one about whom it is written:“‘ I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence, and violent people have been raiding it.For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.Whoever has ears, let them hear. (niv)
