But I tell you, Elijah has already come, but he wasn’t recognized, and they chose to abuse him. And in the same way they will also make the Son of Man suffer.”

第予語爾、依理藹實已蒞臨、而人莫之識、且任意處之。人子之將罹橫逆、亦復如是。』

But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”

He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins!But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all.He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.Unjustly condemned, he was led away. No one cared that he died without descendants, that his life was cut short in midstream. But he was struck down for the rebellion of my people.He had done no wrong and had never deceived anyone. But he was buried like a criminal; he was put in a rich man’s grave.But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the Lord’s good plan will prosper in his hands.When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins.I will give him the honors of a victorious soldier, because he exposed himself to death. He was counted among the rebels. He bore the sins of many and interceded for rebels.

From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead.

Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the man you crucified but whom God raised from the dead.

You rejected this holy, righteous one and instead demanded the release of a murderer.You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. And we are witnesses of this fact!

Herod Antipas, the king, soon heard about Jesus, because everyone was talking about him. Some were saying,“ This must be John the Baptist raised from the dead. That is why he can do such miracles.”Others said,“ He’s the prophet Elijah.” Still others said,“ He’s a prophet like the other great prophets of the past.”When Herod heard about Jesus, he said,“ John, the man I beheaded, has come back from the dead.”For Herod had sent soldiers to arrest and imprison John as a favor to Herodias. She had been his brother Philip’s wife, but Herod had married her.John had been telling Herod,“ It is against God’s law for you to marry your brother’s wife.”So Herodias bore a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But without Herod’s approval she was powerless,for Herod respected John; and knowing that he was a good and holy man, he protected him. Herod was greatly disturbed whenever he talked with John, but even so, he liked to listen to him.Herodias’s chance finally came on Herod’s birthday. He gave a party for his high government officials, army officers, and the leading citizens of Galilee.Then his daughter, also named Herodias, came in and performed a dance that greatly pleased Herod and his guests.“ Ask me for anything you like,” the king said to the girl,“ and I will give it to you.”He even vowed,“ I will give you whatever you ask, up to half my kingdom!”She went out and asked her mother,“ What should I ask for?” Her mother told her,“ Ask for the head of John the Baptist!”So the girl hurried back to the king and told him,“ I want the head of John the Baptist, right now, on a tray!”Then the king deeply regretted what he had said; but because of the vows he had made in front of his guests, he couldn’t refuse her.So he immediately sent an executioner to the prison to cut off John’s head and bring it to him. The soldier beheaded John in the prison,brought his head on a tray, and gave it to the girl, who took it to her mother.

Before he came, John the Baptist preached that all the people of Israel needed to repent of their sins and turn to God and be baptized.As John was finishing his ministry he asked,‘ Do you think I am the Messiah? No, I am not! But he is coming soon— and I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the sandals on his feet.’“ Brothers— you sons of Abraham, and also you God fearing Gentiles— this message of salvation has been sent to us!The people in Jerusalem and their leaders did not recognize Jesus as the one the prophets had spoken about. Instead, they condemned him, and in doing this they fulfilled the prophets’ words that are read every Sabbath.They found no legal reason to execute him, but they asked Pilate to have him killed anyway.

Jesus warned his disciples not to tell anyone who he was.“ The Son of Man must suffer many terrible things,” he said.“ He will be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He will be killed, but on the third day he will be raised from the dead.”Then he said to the crowd,“ If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed?

When Jesus returned to the Temple and began teaching, the leading priests and elders came up to him. They demanded,“ By what authority are you doing all these things? Who gave you the right?”“ I’ll tell you by what authority I do these things if you answer one question,” Jesus replied.“ Did John’s authority to baptize come from heaven, or was it merely human?” They talked it over among themselves.“ If we say it was from heaven, he will ask us why we didn’t believe John.

But someone else is also testifying about me, and I assure you that everything he says about me is true.In fact, you sent investigators to listen to John the Baptist, and his testimony about me was true.Of course, I have no need of human witnesses, but I say these things so you might be saved.John was like a burning and shining lamp, and you were excited for a while about his message.But I have a greater witness than John— my teachings and my miracles. The Father gave me these works to accomplish, and they prove that he sent me.

John also publicly criticized Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for many other wrongs he had done.So Herod put John in prison, adding this sin to his many others.

John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus,

He came to his own people, and even they rejected him.

“ Did John’s authority to baptize come from heaven, or was it merely human? Answer me!”They talked it over among themselves.“ If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn’t believe John.But do we dare say it was merely human?” For they were afraid of what the people would do, because everyone believed that John was a prophet.

For John the Baptist came and showed you the right way to live, but you didn’t believe him, while tax collectors and prostitutes did. And even when you saw this happening, you refused to believe him and repent of your sins.

But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him.

Name one prophet your ancestors didn’t persecute! They even killed the ones who predicted the coming of the Righteous One— the Messiah whom you betrayed and murdered.

For Herod had arrested and imprisoned John as a favor to his wife Herodias( the former wife of Herod’s brother Philip).John had been telling Herod,“ It is against God’s law for you to marry her.”Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of a riot, because all the people believed John was a prophet.But at a birthday party for Herod, Herodias’s daughter performed a dance that greatly pleased him,so he promised with a vow to give her anything she wanted.At her mother’s urging, the girl said,“ I want the head of John the Baptist on a tray!”Then the king regretted what he had said; but because of the vow he had made in front of his guests, he issued the necessary orders.So John was beheaded in the prison,

For John the Baptist didn’t spend his time eating bread or drinking wine, and you say,‘ He’s possessed by a demon.’

Jesus responded,“ Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready. Yet why do the Scriptures say that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be treated with utter contempt?But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they chose to abuse him, just as the Scriptures predicted.”

Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet.John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say,‘ Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you.’“ I tell you the truth, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he is!And from the time John the Baptist began preaching until now, the Kingdom of Heaven has been forcefully advancing, and violent people are attacking it.For before John came, all the prophets and the law of Moses looked forward to this present time.And if you are willing to accept what I say, he is Elijah, the one the prophets said would come.Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!
