The disciples asked him,“ Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah has to come first?”

The disciples asked him,“ Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

And the disciples asked him,“ Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”

Then his disciples asked him,“ Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes?”

So the disciples asked him,“ Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

asked him,“ If you are not the Messiah, why are you baptizing people? Why are you doing that if you aren’t Elijah or the Prophet we’ve been expecting?”

“ I will send the prophet Elijah to you. He will come before the day of the Lord arrives. It will be a great and terrifying day.Elijah will bring peace between parents and their children. He will also bring peace between children and their parents. If that does not happen, I will come. And I will completely destroy the land.”

Some of those standing there heard Jesus cry out. They said,“ He’s calling for Elijah.”Right away one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar and put it on a stick. He offered it to Jesus to drink.The rest said,“ Leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”

They asked him,“ Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said,“ I am not.”“ Are you the Prophet we’ve been expecting?” they asked.“ No,” he answered.

Then they asked Jesus,“ Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah has to come first?”

Just then Moses and Elijah appeared in front of them. Moses and Elijah were talking with Jesus.Peter said to Jesus,“ Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters. One will be for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
