Then Jesus was approached by Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem, who asked,

Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,

Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,

Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They asked him,

Then some Pharisees and scribes* came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,

Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,

Then there come to Jesus from Jerusalem Pharisees and scribes, saying,

Then Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked,

Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,

Then Pharisees and experts in the law came from Jerusalem to Jesus and said,

Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying,

The scribes who had come down from Jerusalem said,“ He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and,“ He drives out demons by the ruler of the demons.”

Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to think to themselves,“ Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to make one convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a child of hell as you are!“ Woe to you, blind guides, who say,‘ Whoever takes an oath by the temple, it means nothing. But whoever takes an oath by the gold of the temple is bound by his oath.’Blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold?Also,‘ Whoever takes an oath by the altar, it means nothing; but whoever takes an oath by the gift that is on it is bound by his oath.’Blind people! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift?Therefore, the one who takes an oath by the altar takes an oath by it and by everything on it.The one who takes an oath by the temple takes an oath by it and by him who dwells in it.And the one who takes an oath by heaven takes an oath by God’s throne and by him who sits on it.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You pay a tenth of mint, dill, and cumin, and yet you have neglected the more important matters of the law— justice, mercy, and faithfulness. These things should have been done without neglecting the others.Blind guides! You strain out a gnat, but gulp down a camel!“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside of it may also become clean.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of the bones of the dead and every kind of impurity.In the same way, on the outside you seem righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

“ The scribes and the Pharisees are seated in the chair of Moses.

The shouting grew loud, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ party got up and argued vehemently,“ We find nothing evil in this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”

On one of those days while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and also from Jerusalem. And the Lord’s power to heal was in him.

But the Pharisees and their scribes were complaining to his disciples,“ Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him.They observed that some of his disciples were eating bread with unclean— that is, unwashed— hands.( For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, keeping the tradition of the elders.When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they have washed. And there are many other customs they have received and keep, like the washing of cups, pitchers, kettles, and dining couches.)So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders, instead of eating bread with ceremonially unclean hands?”He answered them,“ Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines human commands.Abandoning the command of God, you hold on to human tradition.”He also said to them,“ You have a fine way of invalidating God’s command in order to set up your tradition!For Moses said: Honor your father and your mother; and Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.But you say,‘ If anyone tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit you might have received from me is corban’”( that is, an offering devoted to God),“ you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.You nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other similar things.”Summoning the crowd again, he told them,“ Listen to me, all of you, and understand:Nothing that goes into a person from outside can defile him but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”
