耶稣回答说：“我也要问你们一句话，你们若告诉我，我就告诉你们我仗着什么权柄做这些事。约翰的洗礼是从哪里来的？是从天上来的？是从人间来的呢？”他们彼此商议说：“我们若说‘从天上来’，他必对我们说：‘这样，你们为什么不信他呢？’若说‘从人间来’，我们又怕百姓，因为他们都以约翰为先知。”

他在主面前将要为大，淡酒浓酒都不喝，从母腹里就被圣灵充满了。他要使许多以色列人回转，归于主他们的神。他必有以利亚的心志能力，行在主的前面，叫为父的心转向儿女，叫悖逆的人转从义人的智慧，又为主预备合用的百姓。”

他们就问耶稣说：“文士为什么说以利亚必须先来？”耶稣说：“以利亚固然先来复兴万事；经上不是指着人子说，他要受许多的苦被人轻慢呢？我告诉你们，以利亚已经来了，他们也任意待他，正如经上所指着他的话。”

因为众先知和律法说预言，到约翰为止。你们若肯领受，这人就是那应当来的以利亚。
