约翰是点亮的明灯，你们情愿因他的光欢欣一时。

在旷野有声音呼喊着：预备主的道，修直他的路。”照这话，施洗约翰来到旷野，宣讲悔改的洗礼，使罪得赦。犹太全地和全耶路撒冷的人都出去，到约翰那里，承认他们的罪，在约旦河里受他的洗。

约翰所差来的人一走，耶稣就对众人谈到约翰，说：“你们从前到旷野去，是要看什么呢？被吹动的芦苇吗？你们出去到底是要看什么？穿细软衣服的人吗？看哪，那穿华丽衣服、宴乐度日的人是在王宫里。你们出去究竟是要看什么？是先知吗？是的，我告诉你们，他比先知大多了。这个人就是经上所说的：‘看哪，我要差遣我的使者在你面前，他要在你前面为你预备道路。’我告诉你们，凡女子所生的，没有比约翰大的；但在神国里，最小的比他还大。”众百姓和税吏已受过约翰的洗，听见这话，就以神为义；但法利赛人和律法师没有受过约翰的洗，竟废弃了神为他们所定的旨意。

所以，你们应当小心怎样听。因为凡有的，还要给他；凡没有的，连他自以为有的也要夺去。”

那时，耶路撒冷、全犹太和全约旦河地区的人，都到约翰那里去，

约翰的洗礼是从哪里来的？是从天上来的，还是从人间来的呢？”他们彼此商议说：“我们若说‘从天上来的’，他会对我们说：‘这样，你们为什么不信他呢？’

他就走遍约旦河一带地方，宣讲悔改的洗礼，使罪得赦。正如以赛亚先知书上所记的话：“在旷野有声音呼喊着：预备主的道，修直他的路！一切山洼都要填满；大小山冈都要削平！弯弯曲曲的地方要改为笔直；高高低低的道路要改为平坦！凡有血肉之躯的，都要看见神的救恩！”约翰对那出来要受他洗的众人说：“毒蛇的孽种啊，谁指示你们逃避那将要来的愤怒呢？

耶稣转过身来，看见他们跟着，就问他们说：“你们要什么？”他们对他说：“拉比，你在哪里住？”（“拉比”翻出来就是老师。）

我有此意，难道是反覆不定吗？难道我的意愿是从私欲起的，以致我忽是忽非吗？我指着信实的神说，我们向你们所传的道并非又是又非的。

在那些日子，施洗的约翰出来，在犹太的旷野宣讲：“你们要悔改！因为天国近了。”这人就是以赛亚先知所说的：“在旷野有声音呼喊着：预备主的道，修直他的路。”

你却放纵如水，必不得居首位；因为你上了你父亲的床，你上了我的榻，污辱了它！
