Late in the afternoon the 12 disciples came to him. They said,“ Send the crowd away. They can go to the nearby villages and countryside. There they can find food and a place to stay. There is nothing here.”

Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said,“ Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”

Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him,“ Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.”

Late in the afternoon the twelve disciples came to him and said,“ Send the crowds away to the nearby villages and farms, so they can find food and lodging for the night. There is nothing to eat here in this remote place.”

Late in the day, the Twelve approached and said to him,“ Send the crowd away, so that they can go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find food and lodging, because we are in a deserted place here.”

Now the day was ending, and the twelve came up and said to Him,“ Dismiss the crowd, so that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and get something to eat; because here, we are in a secluded place.”

When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him,“ Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted place here.”

And the day began to wear away; and the twelve came, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages and country round about, and lodge, and get provisions: for we are here in a desert place.

Now the day began to draw to a close, so the twelve came and said to Jesus,“ Send the crowd away, so they can go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and food, because we are in an isolated place.”

The day began to wear away; and the twelve came and said to him,“ Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and farms, and lodge, and get food, for we are here in a deserted place.”

Jesus did not say a word. So his disciples came to him. They begged him,“ Send her away. She keeps crying out after us.”

They spoke against God. They said,“ Can God really put food on a table in the desert?It is true that he struck the rock, and streams of water poured out. Huge amounts of water flowed down. But can he also give us bread? Can he supply meat for his people?”

By that time it was late in the day. His disciples came to him.“ There is nothing here,” they said.“ It’s already very late.Send the people away. Then they can go to the nearby countryside and villages to buy something to eat.”But Jesus answered,“ You give them something to eat.” They said to him,“ That would take more than half a year’s pay! Should we go and spend that much on bread? Are we supposed to feed them?”“ How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.“ Go and see.” When they found out, they said,“ Five loaves and two fish.”Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.So they sat down in groups of 100s and 50s.Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish. He looked up to heaven and gave thanks. He broke the loaves into pieces. Then he gave them to his disciples to pass around to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.All of them ate and were satisfied.The disciples picked up 12 baskets of broken pieces of bread and fish.The number of men who had eaten was 5,000.

When it was almost evening, the disciples came to him.“ There is nothing here,” they said.“ It’s already getting late. Send the crowds away. They can go and buy some food in the villages.”Jesus replied,“ They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.”“ We have only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.“ Bring them here to me,” he said.Then Jesus directed the people to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish. He looked up to heaven and gave thanks. He broke the loaves into pieces. Then he gave them to the disciples. And the disciples gave them to the people.All of them ate and were satisfied. The disciples picked up 12 baskets of leftover pieces.The number of men who ate was about 5,000. Women and children also ate.

Then Jesus called for his disciples to come to him. He said,“ I feel deep concern for these people. They have already been with me three days. They don’t have anything to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry. If I do, they will become too weak on their way home.”

Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him. So he said to Philip,“ Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?”He asked this only to test Philip. He already knew what he was going to do.Philip answered him,“ Suppose we were able to buy enough bread for each person to have just a bite. That would take more than half a year’s pay!”Another of his disciples spoke up. It was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He said,“ Here is a boy with five small loaves of barley bread. He also has two small fish. But how far will that go in such a large crowd?”Jesus said,“ Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down. About 5,000 men were there.Then Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks. He handed out the bread to those who were seated. He gave them as much as they wanted. And he did the same with the fish.When all of them had enough to eat, Jesus spoke to his disciples.“ Gather the leftover pieces,” he said.“ Don’t waste anything.”So they gathered what was left over from the five barley loaves. They filled 12 baskets with the pieces left by those who had eaten.The people saw the sign that Jesus did. Then they began to say,“ This must be the Prophet who is supposed to come into the world.”But Jesus knew that they planned to come and force him to be their king. So he went away again to a mountain by himself.

Some time after this, Jesus crossed over to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. It is also called the Sea of Tiberias.

I took care of you in the desert. It was a land of burning heat.

“ I will make a covenant with them. It promises to give them peace. I will get rid of the wild animals in the land. Then my sheep can live safely in the desert. They can sleep in the forests.
