蓋耶穌命邪魔脫離其人也。而魔之屢憑此人、由來已久；雖繫以鐵索、械以桎梏、輒自折斷而為魔逐至曠野。

For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

This was because Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times the spirit had taken hold of him. The man’s hands and feet were chained, and he was kept under guard. But he had broken his chains. And then the demon had forced him to go out into lonely places in the countryside.

For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man.( For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.)

甚至有人把保羅貼身的手巾圍巾拿去，放在病人身上，病就好了，邪靈也出來了。那時，有幾個趕鬼的猶太人，周遊各處，擅自用主耶穌的名，向身上有邪靈的人說：“我奉保羅所傳的耶穌的名，命令你們出來。”有一個猶太人士基瓦，是祭司長，他的七個兒子都作這事。邪靈回答他們：“耶穌我認識，保羅我也知道；你們是誰？”邪靈所附的那人就撲到他們身上，制伏了兩人，勝過了他們，使他們赤著身帶著傷，從那房子逃了出來。

你看，污靈一抓住他，他就忽然喊叫，並且抽瘋，口吐白沫；污靈又折磨糟踐他，不肯放過他。

他們就把孩子帶到他跟前。那鬼一見耶穌，就立刻使孩子抽了一陣瘋，倒在地上，流著唾沫打滾。耶穌問他父親：“這事臨到他有多久了？”他說：“從小就是這樣。鬼常常把他扔在火裡水中，要毀滅他。如果你能作甚麼，求你可憐我們，幫助我們。”耶穌對他說：“‘如果你能’（“如果你能”有些抄本作“你若能信”）—對於信的人，甚麼都能！”孩子的父親立刻喊著說：“我信！但我的信心不夠，求你幫助我。”耶穌看見群眾圍攏了來，就斥責那污鬼說：“聾啞的鬼，我吩咐你從他身上出來，不要再進去。”那鬼大聲喊叫，使孩子重重地抽了一陣瘋，就出來了。孩子好像死了一樣，所以許多人都說：“他死了！”

那孩子正走過來的時候，污鬼把他摔倒，使他重重地抽瘋。耶穌斥責那污靈，把孩子醫好，交給他父親。

因為當時耶穌吩咐他：“你這污靈，從這人身上出來！”

以溫柔勸導那些對抗的人，或許神給他們悔改的心，可以認識真理。他們雖然曾經被魔鬼擄去，隨從他的意思而行，或許也能醒悟過來，脫離魔鬼的陷阱。

那人經常住在墳墓中間，從來沒有人能綁住他，甚至用鎖鍊都不能。曾經有很多次，人用腳鐐和鎖鍊捆綁他，鎖鍊卻被他掙斷，腳鐐也被他弄碎，始終沒有人能制伏他。他晝夜在墳墓裡和山野間喊叫，又用石頭砍自己。
