基督在他肉身的日子裡，曾經用強烈的呼號和淚水，向能救他脫離死亡的那一位獻上了祈禱和懇求，就因著他的虔誠蒙了垂聽。

大清早，天還沒亮，耶穌就起來，走出去，到一個荒僻的地方，在那裡禱告。

他告別了他們，就上山去禱告。

你們要恆切禱告，禱告中要保持警醒，懷著感謝的心。

他遣散了人群以後，就獨自上山去禱告。到了晚上，只有他一個人在那裡。那時，船已經離岸有幾百公尺，由於逆風，被波浪沖擊。天快亮的時候，耶穌在湖面上行走，向他們而去。

但以理知道這文書已經簽署了，回到自己的家裡——他閣樓上的窗戶朝耶路撒冷開著——仍然一天三次雙膝跪下，在他的神面前禱告、感謝，就像以前那樣做。

對他們說：「我的靈魂很憂傷，幾乎要死。你們留在這裡，要警醒。」耶穌稍往前走，俯伏在地，禱告說，如果有可能，讓那時刻離開他。他說：「阿爸！父啊！在你，沒有不可能的事，請把這杯從我這裡拿走吧！但不要照我的意願，而要照你的意願。」

至於你，你禱告的時候，要進入你的內室，關上門，向你在隱祕中的父禱告。這樣，你那在隱祕中察看的父就將回報你。

用仇恨的話語圍攻我，又無故與我爭戰；他們用控告來回報我的愛，但我不斷地禱告。

我的神哪，我白天呼求，你不回應；我在夜間也得不到安寧！

願死亡突然毀滅他們，願他們活活下到陰間！因為惡事在他們的住處，就在他們當中。至於我，我要向神呼求，耶和華必拯救我。傍晚、清晨、正午，我都要悲訴哀鳴，他必垂聽我的聲音。

最後雅各獨自留下。那夜，有一個人與雅各摔跤，直到黎明。那人見自己勝不過他，就碰了他的大腿窩；於是雅各與那人摔跤的時候，大腿窩就脫節了。那人說：「天亮了，讓我走吧！」雅各說：「你不祝福我，我就不讓你走。」
