The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.

There were men guarding Jesus. They began laughing at him and beating him.

Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him.

When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face.“ Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded. (niv)

This is what the Lord says— the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel— to him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the servant of rulers:“ Kings will see you and stand up, princes will see and bow down, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.” (niv)

He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem. (niv)

They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. (niv)

Do not let them think,“ Aha, just what we wanted!” or say,“ We have swallowed him up.” (niv)

Marshal your troops now, city of troops, for a siege is laid against us. They will strike Israel’s ruler on the cheek with a rod. (niv)

Just as there were many who were appalled at him— his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being and his form marred beyond human likeness— (niv)

The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace( that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers.They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him.And they began to call out to him,“ Hail, king of the Jews!”Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him.And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. (niv)

He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said,‘ I am the Son of God.’”In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him. (niv)

God assails me and tears me in his anger and gnashes his teeth at me; my opponent fastens on me his piercing eyes.People open their mouths to jeer at me; they strike my cheek in scorn and unite together against me. (niv)

But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people.All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. (niv)

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death.But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forwardand declared,“ This fellow said,‘ I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus,“ Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?”But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him,“ I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”“ You have said so,” Jesus replied.“ But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothes and said,“ He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.What do you think?”“ He is worthy of death,” they answered.Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped himand said,“ Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?” (niv)

What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death.Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said,“ Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.
