He said,“ Father, if you are willing, take this cup of suffering away from me. But do what you want, not what I want.”

He went a little farther. Then he fell with his face to the ground. He prayed,“ My Father, if it is possible, take this cup of suffering away from me. But let what you want be done, not what I want.”

“ My soul is troubled. What should I say?‘ Father, keep me from having to go through with this’? No. This is the very reason I have come to this point in my life.Father, bring glory to your name!” Then a voice came from heaven. It said,“ I have brought glory to my name. I will bring glory to it again.”

Jesus went away a second time. He prayed,“ My Father, is it possible for this cup to be taken away? But if I must drink it, may what you want be done.”

“ You don’t know what you’re asking for,” Jesus said to them.“ Can you drink the cup of suffering I am going to drink?”“ We can,” they answered.

Jesus commanded Peter,“ Put your sword away! Shouldn’t I drink the cup of suffering the Father has given me?”

“ Abba, Father,” he said,“ everything is possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. But let what you want be done, not what I want.”

I can do nothing by myself. I judge only as I hear. And my judging is fair. I do not try to please myself. I try to please the one who sent me.

I have not come down from heaven to do what I want to do. I have come to do what the one who sent me wants me to do.

My God, I have come to do what you want. Your law is in my heart.”

Then I said,‘ Here I am. It is written about me in the book. I have come to do what you want, my God.’ ”( Psalm 40:6–8)First Christ said,“ You didn’t want sacrifices and offerings. You didn’t want burnt offerings and sin offerings. You weren’t pleased with them.” He said this even though they were offered in keeping with the law.Then he said,“ Here I am. I have come to do what you want.” He did away with the shadow of the good things that were coming. He did it to put in place the good things themselves.We have been made holy by what God wanted. We have been made holy because Jesus Christ offered his body once and for all time.

Your Lord and King speaks. He is your God. He stands up for his people. He says,“ I have taken from you the cup of my great anger. It made you unsteady on your feet. But you will never drink from that cup again.

Jesus said,“ My food is to do what my Father sent me to do. My food is to finish his work.

After Jesus took the cup, he gave thanks. He said,“ Take this cup and share it among yourselves.I tell you, I will not drink wine with you again until God’s kingdom comes.”Then Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to them and said,“ This is my body. It is given for you. Every time you eat it, do this in memory of me.”In the same way, after the supper he took the cup. He said,“ This cup is the new covenant in my blood. It is poured out for you.

So he left them and went away once more. For the third time he prayed the same thing.

Wake up, Jerusalem! Wake up! Get up! The Lord has handed you the cup of his great anger. And you have drunk from it. That cup makes people unsteady on their feet. And you have drunk from it to the very last drop.

The Lord is the God of Israel. He said to me,“ Take this cup from my hand. It is filled with the wine of my great anger. Make all the nations to which I send you drink it.
