When will the Sabbath end, so we can open up the grain bins? We’re eager to sell less for a higher price, and to cheat the buyer with rigged scales!We’re eager to trade silver for the poor, a pair of sandals for the needy! We want to mix in some chaff with the grain!”

They trample on the dirt-covered heads of the poor; they push the destitute away. A man and his father go to the same girl; in this way they show disrespect for my moral purity.

They come to you in crowds, and they sit in front of you as my people. They hear your words, but do not obey them. For they talk lustfully, and their heart is set on their own advantage.

But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you!And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be thrown down to Hades! For if the miracles done among you had been done in Sodom, it would have continued to this day.But I tell you, it will be more bearable for the region of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you!”

For people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self- control, savage, opposed to what is good,treacherous, reckless, conceited, loving pleasure rather than loving God.They will maintain the outward appearance of religion but will have repudiated its power. So avoid people like these.For some of these insinuate themselves into households and captivate weak women who are overwhelmed with sins and led along by various passions.

Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside may become clean too!“ Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that look beautiful on the outside but inside are full of the bones of the dead and of everything unclean.In the same way, on the outside you look righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

They have treated father and mother with contempt within you; they have oppressed the foreigner among you; they have wronged the orphan and the widow within you.

They confiscate the fields they desire, and seize the houses they want. They defraud people of their homes, and deprive people of the land they have inherited.

For we never appeared with flattering speech, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed– God is our witness–
