Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has been treated violently, and violent men take it by force.For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come.The one who has ears to hear, let him hear.“ But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call out to the other children,and say,‘ We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a song of mourning, and you did not mourn.’For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say,‘ He has a demon!’The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say,‘ Behold, a gluttonous man and a heavy drinker, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ And yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

I will set out and go to my father, and will say to him,“ Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight;

And He answered and said,“ Elijah is coming and will restore all things;but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted. So also the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”

that you be driven away from mankind and your dwelling place be with the animals of the field, and you be given grass to eat like cattle and be drenched with the dew of heaven; and seven periods of time will pass over you, until you recognize that the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind and bestows it on whomever He wishes.And in that it was commanded to leave the stump with the roots of the tree, your kingdom will remain as yours after you recognize that it is Heaven that rules.

This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him,“ Who are you?”And he confessed and did not deny; and this is what he confessed:“ I am not the Christ.”And so they asked him,“ What then? Are you Elijah?” And he* said,“ I am not.”“ Are you the Prophet?” And he answered,“ No.”Then they said to him,“ Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”He said,“ I am the voice of one calling out in the wilderness,‘ Make the way of the Lord straight,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”And the messengers had been sent from the Pharisees.They asked him, and said to him,“ Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”John answered them, saying,“ I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.It is He who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy even to untie the strap of His sandal.”These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing people.
