那時，耶穌對眾人說：“你們帶著刀棒出來，把我當作強盜捉拿嗎？我天天坐在殿裡教導人，你們卻沒有逮捕我。

祭司長和經學家聽見了，就想辦法怎樣除掉耶穌，卻又怕他，因為群眾都希奇他的教訓。

他們又來到耶路撒冷。耶穌在殿裡行走的時候，祭司長、經學家和長老來到他跟前，問他：“你憑甚麼權柄作這些事？誰給你權柄作這些事？”耶穌對他們說：“我要問你們一句話，你們回答了我，我就告訴你們我憑甚麼權柄作這些事。約翰的洗禮是從天上來的，還是從人來的呢？你們回答我吧。”他們就彼此議論：“如果我們說‘是從天上來的’，他就會說‘那你們為甚麼不信他呢？’如果我們說‘是從人來的’……”他們害怕群眾，因為眾人都認為約翰的確是先知。於是他們回答耶穌：“我們不知道。”耶穌對他們說：“我也不告訴你們我憑甚麼權柄作這些事。”

耶穌白天在殿裡教導人，晚上就到橄欖山上去過夜。群眾清早起來上聖殿，到他那裡要聽他講道。

過兩天，就是逾越節和除酵節了，祭司長和經學家設法怎樣用詭計逮捕耶穌，把他殺害。他們說：“不可在節期下手，免得引起民眾暴動。”

耶穌對大祭司說：“我向來對世人講話都是公開的，我常常在會堂和聖殿裡，就是在所有猶太人聚集的地方教導人，暗地裡我並沒有講甚麼。

那時，祭司長和民間的長老聚集在大祭司該亞法的官邸，商議怎樣用詭計逮捕耶穌，把他殺害。

摩西不是曾經把律法傳給你們嗎？你們竟然沒有一個人遵行律法。你們為甚麼想要殺我呢？”

他們知道他這比喻是針對他們說的，就想要捉拿他，但因為害怕群眾，只好離開他走了。

他們又要逮捕耶穌，他卻從他們的手中逃脫了。

他們中間有人想逮捕耶穌，只是沒有人下手。

從那天起，他們就想殺害耶穌。因此，耶穌不再在猶太人中間公開活動，卻離開那裡，到曠野附近的地方去；到了一座名叫以法蓮的城，就和門徒住在那裡。猶太人的逾越節快到了，有許多人在過節前從各鄉上耶路撒冷去，要在那裡潔淨自己。他們到處尋找耶穌，站在聖殿裡的時候，彼此說：“你們認為怎樣？他不會來過節吧？”祭司長和法利賽人早已下了命令：如果有人知道耶穌在哪裡，就要前來報告，好去逮捕他。

我知道你們是亞伯拉罕的後裔；但你們想殺我，因為你們心裡不能容納我的道。我所說的，是我在父那裡看見的；但你們所作的，卻是從你們的父那裡聽見的。”他們說：“我們的祖宗是亞伯拉罕。”耶穌說：“你們若是亞伯拉罕的子孫，就必作亞伯拉罕所作的。現在我把從神那裡聽見的真理告訴了你們，你們竟然想殺我，這不是亞伯拉罕所作的。

耶穌進了聖殿，正在教導人的時候，祭司長和民間的長老前來問他：“你憑甚麼權柄作這些事？誰給你這權柄？”
