那時，耶穌對眾人說：「你們像對付強盜一樣拿著刀棍來抓我嗎？我天天在聖殿裡教導人，你們並沒有來抓我。

祭司長和律法教師聽到這番話後，就策劃如何殺害耶穌，只是有些怕祂，因為百姓都對祂的教導感到驚奇。

他們再次回到耶路撒冷。耶穌在聖殿裡行走的時候，祭司長、律法教師和長老上前質問祂：「你憑什麼權柄做這些事？誰授權給你了？」耶穌說：「我也要問你們一個問題，你們回答了，我就告訴你們我憑什麼權柄做這些事。約翰的洗禮是從天上來的還是從人來的？請回答我！」他們彼此議論說：「如果我們說『是從天上來的』，祂一定會問，『那你們為什麼不信他？』如果我們說『是從人來的』，又怕觸怒百姓，因為他們都相信約翰真的是先知。」於是，他們回答說：「我們不知道。」耶穌說：「我也不告訴你們我憑什麼權柄做這些事。」

耶穌每天在聖殿裡講道，晚上則到城外的橄欖山上過夜。百姓一早都趕去聖殿聽祂的教導。

再過兩天就是逾越節和除酵節，祭司長和律法教師正暗暗地找機會拘捕、殺害耶穌。

耶穌說：「我是公開對世人講的，我常在猶太人聚集的會堂和聖殿教導人，沒有在背地裡講過什麼。

那時，祭司長和民間的長老正聚集在大祭司該亞法的府裡，密謀逮捕、殺害耶穌。

摩西不是把律法傳給了你們嗎？你們卻沒有一個人遵守。為什麼想要殺我呢？」

他們聽出這比喻是針對他們說的，就想逮捕耶穌，但又害怕百姓，只好先離開了。

他們又要抓耶穌，但祂從他們手中逃脫了。

有些人想抓祂，只是沒有人下手。

從那天起，他們就計劃要殺害耶穌，所以耶穌不再公開地在猶太人中間露面。祂離開伯大尼，前往靠近曠野的地方，到了以法蓮城，就和門徒住下來。猶太人的逾越節快到了，有很多人從鄉下上耶路撒冷，預備在過節前潔淨自己。他們四處尋找耶穌，又彼此在聖殿裡談論：「你們怎麼想？祂不會來過節吧？」當時祭司長和法利賽人早已下令，如果有人知道耶穌在哪裡，就來報告，他們好去抓祂。

「我知道你們是亞伯拉罕的子孫，但你們卻想殺我，因為你們心裡容不下我的道。我所說的，是我從父那裡看到的，你們卻照著你們父的話去做。」他們說：「我們的父就是亞伯拉罕！」耶穌說：「你們如果真是亞伯拉罕的子孫，一定會做他所做的事。我把從上帝那裡聽到的真理告訴你們，你們反要殺我，亞伯拉罕絕不做這樣的事。

耶穌進了聖殿，正在教導人的時候，祭司長和民間的長老來質問祂：「你憑什麼權柄做這些事？誰授權給你了？」
