A certain ruler asked him,“ Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

A certain ruler asked Jesus a question.“ Good teacher,” he said,“ what must I do to receive eternal life?”

And a ruler asked him,“ Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question:“ Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”

A ruler questioned Him, saying,“ Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying,“ Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

A ruler asked Him,“ Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

Now a certain ruler asked him,“ Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him,“ Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”“ Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him.“ No one is good except God alone.You know the commandments: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother.”He said to him,“ Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth.”Looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him,“ You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”But he was dismayed by this demand, and he went away grieving, because he had many possessions.Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,“ How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”The disciples were astonished at his words. Again Jesus said to them,“ Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”They were even more astonished, saying to one another,“ Then who can be saved?”Looking at them, Jesus said,“ With man it is impossible, but not with God, because all things are possible with God.”Peter began to tell him,“ Look, we have left everything and followed you.”“ Truly I tell you,” Jesus said,“ there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for my sake and for the sake of the gospel,who will not receive a hundred times more, now at this time— houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions— and eternal life in the age to come.But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

Just then someone came up and asked him,“ Teacher, what good must I do to have eternal life?”“ Why do you ask me about what is good?” he said to him.“ There is only one who is good. If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”“ Which ones?” he asked him. Jesus answered: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness;honor your father and your mother; and love your neighbor as yourself.“ I have kept all these,” the young man told him.“ What do I still lack?”“ If you want to be perfect,” Jesus said to him,“ go, sell your belongings and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”When the young man heard that, he went away grieving, because he had many possessions.Jesus said to his disciples,“ Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven.Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”When the disciples heard this, they were utterly astonished and asked,“ Then who can be saved?”Jesus looked at them and said,“ With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”Then Peter responded to him,“ See, we have left everything and followed you. So what will there be for us?”Jesus said to them,“ Truly I tell you, in the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields because of my name will receive a hundred times more and will inherit eternal life.But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

He escorted them out and said,“ Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

“ Why do you call me‘ Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say?

Then an expert in the law stood up to test him, saying,“ Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”“ What is written in the law?” he asked him.“ How do you read it?”He answered,“ Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,” and“ your neighbor as yourself.”“ You’ve answered correctly,” he told him.“ Do this and you will live.”

“ A son honors his father, and a servant his master. But if I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is your fear of me? says the LORD of Armies to you priests, who despise my name.” Yet you ask,“ How have we despised your name?”

You call me Teacher and Lord— and you are speaking rightly, since that is what I am.So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done for you.

So my people come to you in crowds, sit in front of you, and hear your words, but they don’t obey them. Their mouths go on passionately, but their hearts pursue dishonest profit.

When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles,“ Brothers, what should we do?”
