Even so ye also, when ye shall have done all the things that are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants; we have done that which it was our duty to do.

Yet preaching the Good News is not something I can boast about. I am compelled by God to do it. How terrible for me if I didn’t preach the Good News!If I were doing this on my own initiative, I would deserve payment. But I have no choice, for God has given me this sacred trust.

In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for“ God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.

For I am the least of all the apostles. And who has given him so much that he needs to pay it back?

If you sin, how does that affect God? Even if you sin again and again, what effect will it have on him?If you are good, is this some great gift to him? What could you possibly give him?

“ Can a person do anything to help God? Can even a wise person be helpful to him?Is it any advantage to the Almighty if you are righteous? Would it be any gain to him if you were perfect?

We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.

Make their path dark and slippery, with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.I did them no wrong, but they laid a trap for me. I did them no wrong, but they dug a pit to catch me.

Now throw this useless servant into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

But who am I, and who are my people, that we could give anything to you? Then I said,“ It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”

Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christand become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.

People may be pure in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their motives.Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.

“ Then these righteous ones will reply,‘ Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink?Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing?When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’“ And the King will say,‘ I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’
