「愛父母過於愛我的人不配作我的門徒；愛兒女過於愛我的人不配作我的門徒；

愛惜自己生命的，必會失掉生命；憎惡自己今世生命的，才能保住生命，直到永生。

不但如此，我看萬事都毫無價值，因為認識我主基督耶穌最寶貴。我為祂失去了一切，我把失去的一切視為垃圾，好得到基督，

不過哪怕是犧牲性命，我也在所不辭，，只盼望我能跑完當跑的路程，完成主耶穌交託給我的使命，為上帝充滿恩典的福音做見證。

除你以外，在天上我還有誰？除你以外，在地上我別無愛慕。儘管我身心俱衰，上帝永遠是我心中的力量，永遠屬於我。

弟兄們是靠著羔羊的血和自己所見證的道戰勝了牠，他們甘願犧牲，視死如歸。

所以，我憎惡生命，因為在日光之下所做的一切都令我愁煩。唉！這一切都是虛空，都是捕風。我憎惡自己在日光之下勞碌得來的一切，因為這些必留給後人。誰知道那人是智者還是愚人呢？然而，他卻要接管我在日光之下用智慧辛勤經營的產業。這也是虛空。

雅各也和拉結同房，他深愛拉結，勝過愛利亞。他又替拉班工作了七年。耶和華看見利亞失寵，就使利亞生育，但拉結卻不生育。

以致我寧願窒息而死，也不願這樣活著。我厭惡生命，不想永活。不要管我，因為我的日子都是虛空。

耶和華說：「我曾愛你們。」你們卻說：「你在何事上愛我們呢？」耶和華說：「以掃不是雅各的哥哥嗎？但我卻愛雅各，厭惡以掃。我使以掃的山嶺荒涼，把他的地業留給曠野的豺狼。」

正如聖經上說：「我愛雅各，厭惡以掃。」
