Then he told this parable:“ A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.

Then Jesus told a story.“ A man had a fig tree,” he said.“ It was growing in his vineyard. When he went to look for fruit on it, he didn’t find any.

Then Jesus told this story:“ A man planted a fig tree in his garden and came again and again to see if there was any fruit on it, but he was always disappointed.

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

Yet I planted you a choice vine, wholly of pure seed. How then have you turned degenerate and become a wild vine?

Let me sing for my beloved my love song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; and he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes.And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard.What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes?

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit.

You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it.You cleared the ground for it; it took deep root and filled the land.The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches.It sent out its branches to the sea and its shoots to the River.Why then have you broken down its walls, so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit?The boar from the forest ravages it, and all that move in the field feed on it.

And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it,“ May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once.When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying,“ How did the fig tree wither at once?”

When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit.And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them.Finally he sent his son to them, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves,‘ This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”

On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry.And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.And he said to it,“ May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.

When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.And he sent another servant. But they also beat and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.And he sent yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out.Then the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves,‘ This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.’
