“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her own brood under her wings, and ye would not!

Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They even killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.

He watches over His nest like an eagle and hovers over His young; He spreads His wings, catches him, and lifts him up on His pinions.The Lord alone led him, with no help from a foreign god.

How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, yet you were not willing!See, your house is left to you desolate.For I tell you, you will never see Me again until you say,‘ He who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One’!”

They will crush you and your children within you to the ground, and they will not leave one stone on another in you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”

For the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has said:“ You will be delivered by returning and resting; your strength will lie in quiet confidence. But you are not willing.”

However, I did give them this command: Obey Me, and then I will be your God, and you will be My people. You must follow every way I command you so that it may go well with you.Yet they didn’t listen or pay attention but followed their own advice and according to their own stubborn, evil heart. They went backward and not forward.

But turning to them, Jesus said,“ Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and your children.

May the Lord reward you for what you have done, and may you receive a full reward from the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.”

Children of Zion, rejoice and be glad in the Lord your God, because He gives you the autumn rain for your vindication. He sends showers for you, both autumn and spring rain as before.

I weep because of these things; my eyes flow with tears. For there is no one nearby to comfort me, no one to keep me alive. My children are desolate because the enemy has prevailed.

So I sent you all My servants the prophets time and time again, saying: Don’t do this detestable thing that I hate.But they did not listen or pay attention; they did not turn from their evil or stop burning incense to other gods.So My fierce wrath poured out and burned in Judah’s cities and Jerusalem’s streets so that they became the desolate ruin they are today.

If only they were wise, they would figure it out; they would understand their fate.

Do not be like your ancestors; the earlier prophets proclaimed to them: This is what the Lord of Hosts says: Turn from your evil ways and your evil deeds. But they did not listen or pay attention to Me”— this is the Lord’s declaration.

Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children.But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.

“ Then he became angry and didn’t want to go in. So his father came out and pleaded with him.

But they were disobedient and rebelled against You. They flung Your law behind their backs and killed Your prophets who warned them in order to turn them back to You. They committed terrible blasphemies.

He will cover you with His feathers; you will take refuge under His wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield.

Why was no one there when I came? Why was there no one to answer when I called? Is My hand too short to redeem? Or do I have no power to deliver? Look, I dry up the sea by My rebuke; I turn the rivers into a wilderness; their fish rot because of lack of water and die of thirst.

This is what the Lord says: Stand by the roadways and look. Ask about the ancient paths: Which is the way to what is good? Then take it and find rest for yourselves. But they protested,“ We won’t!”

Be gracious to me, God, be gracious to me, for I take refuge in You. I will seek refuge in the shadow of Your wings until danger passes.

If only My people would listen to Me and Israel would follow My ways,

Yet it happened because of the sins of her prophets and the guilt of her priests, who shed the blood of the righteous within her.

Saul agreed with putting him to death. On that day a severe persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout the land of Judea and Samaria.

If only they had such a heart to fear Me and keep all My commands always, so that they and their children will prosper forever.

They were stoning Stephen as he called out:“ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”

But the farmers took his slaves, beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.Again, he sent other slaves, more than the first group, and they did the same to them.

And the others seized his slaves, treated them outrageously and killed them.

But you denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer given to you.You killed the source of life, whom God raised from the dead; we are witnesses of this.

You were patient with them for many years, and Your Spirit warned them through Your prophets, but they would not listen. Therefore, You handed them over to the surrounding peoples.

Let Israel celebrate its Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King.

“ The words of Jonadab, son of Rechab, have been carried out. He commanded his sons not to drink wine, and they have not drunk to this very day because they have obeyed their ancestor’s command. But I have spoken to you time and time again, and you have not obeyed Me!

This is what the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel says: I am Yahweh your God, who teaches you for your benefit, who leads you in the way you should go.If only you had paid attention to My commands. Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.Your descendants would have been as countless as the sand, and the offspring of your body like its grains; their name would not be cut off or eliminated from My presence.

Since I called out and you refused, extended my hand and no one paid attention,since you neglected all my counsel and did not accept my correction,I, in turn, will laugh at your calamity. I will mock when terror strikes you,when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when trouble and stress overcome you.Then they will call me, but I won’t answer; they will search for me, but won’t find me.Because they hated knowledge, didn’t choose to fear the Lord,were not interested in my counsel, and rejected all my correction,

He sent out his slaves to summon those invited to the banquet, but they didn’t want to come.

But Yahweh, the God of their ancestors sent word against them by the hand of His messengers, sending them time and time again, for He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place.But they kept ridiculing God’s messengers, despising His words, and scoffing at His prophets, until the Lord’s wrath was so stirred up against His people that there was no remedy.

God, Your faithful love is so valuable that people take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.

I am Yahweh your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.“ But My people did not listen to Me; Israel did not obey Me.

My people are bent on turning from Me. Though they call to Him on high, He will not exalt them at all.

I have struck down your children in vain; they would not accept discipline. Your own sword has devoured your prophets like a ravaging lion.

They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who executed him with the sword and threw his corpse into the burial place of the common people.

Protect me as the pupil of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings
