It is a day of sabbath rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath.”

But as for me, when they were sick, My clothing was sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting; And my prayer would return to my own heart.

“ Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord.

To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”

When I wept and chastened my soul with fasting, That became my reproach.I also made sackcloth my garment; I became a byword to them.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise.

For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.

Those who sow in tears Shall reap in joy.He who continually goes forth weeping, Bearing seed for sowing, Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, Bringing his sheaves with him.

‘ Why have we fasted,’ they say,‘ and You have not seen? Why have we afflicted our souls, and You take no notice?’“ In fact, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, And exploit all your laborers.Indeed you fast for strife and debate, And to strike with the fist of wickedness. You will not fast as you do this day, To make your voice heard on high.Is it a fast that I have chosen, A day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush, And to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Would you call this a fast, And an acceptable day to the Lord?“ Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke?Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?

Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.

For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:“ So I swore in My wrath,‘ They shall not enter My rest,’” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:“ I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

I have seen his ways, and will heal him; I will also lead him, And restore comforts to him And to his mourners.“ I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near,” Says the Lord,“ And I will heal him.”

Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.
