And rejoice before the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name— you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, the Levites in your towns, and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows living among you.Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and follow carefully these decrees.Celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles for seven days after you have gathered the produce of your threshing floor and your winepress.Be joyful at your festival— you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites, the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns. As she got up to glean, Boaz gave orders to his men,“ Let her gather among the sheaves and don’t reprimand her.Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don’t rebuke her.”So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered, and it amounted to about an ephah.She carried it back to town, and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gathered. Ruth also brought out and gave her what she had left over after she had eaten enough.Her mother-in-law asked her,“ Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!” Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working.“ The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz,” she said.“ The Lord bless him!” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law.“ He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and the dead.” She added,“ That man is our close relative; he is one of our guardian-redeemers.”Then Ruth the Moabite said,“ He even said to me,‘ Stay with my workers until they finish harvesting all my grain.’”Naomi said to Ruth her daughter- in- law,“ It will be good for you, my daughter, to go with the women who work for him, because in someone else’s field you might be harmed.”So Ruth stayed close to the women of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother- in- law. (niv)

So she went out, entered a field and began to glean behind the harvesters. As it turned out, she was working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelek.Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the harvesters,“ The Lord be with you!”“ The Lord bless you!” they answered.Boaz asked the overseer of his harvesters,“ Who does that young woman belong to?”The overseer replied,“ She is the Moabite who came back from Moab with Naomi.She said,‘ Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.’ She came into the field and has remained here from morning till now, except for a short rest in the shelter.” (niv)

So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to visit you in advance and finish the arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a generous gift, not as one grudgingly given.Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.As it is written:“ They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.”Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. (niv)

Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. (niv)

“ If I have denied the desires of the poor or let the eyes of the widow grow weary,if I have kept my bread to myself, not sharing it with the fatherless—but from my youth I reared them as a father would, and from my birth I guided the widow—if I have seen anyone perishing for lack of clothing, or the needy without garments,and their hearts did not bless me for warming them with the fleece from my sheep,if I have raised my hand against the fatherless, knowing that I had influence in court, (niv)

Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the Lord delivers them in times of trouble.The Lord protects and preserves them— they are counted among the blessed in the land— he does not give them over to the desire of their foes.The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness. (niv)

and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. (niv)

They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor, their righteousness endures forever; their horn will be lifted high in honor. (niv)

But now as for what is inside you— be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you. (niv)
