Joshua called together the Gibeonites and said,“ Why did you lie to us? Why did you say that you live in a distant land when you live right here among us?

約書亞把他們召了來，告訴他們說：『為甚麼你們哄騙我們說：「我們離你們很遠」，其實你們卻是住在我們中間的？

約書亞召之曰、爾居我中、何言離此甚遠、以欺我耶、

約書亞召基遍人曰、爾之居處鄰近於我、曷欺我、言來自遠方乎。

Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said,“ Why did you deceive us by saying,‘ We live a long way from you,’ while actually you live near us?

Joshua sent for the people of Gibeon. He said to them,“ Why did you trick us? You said,‘ We live far away from you.’ But in fact you live close to us.

Joshua summoned them, and he said to them,“ Why did you deceive us, saying,‘ We are very far from you,’ when you dwell among us?

Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said to them,“ Why did you deceive us by telling us you live far away from us, when in fact you live among us?

Then Joshua called for them and spoke to them, saying,“ Why have you deceived us, saying,‘ We are very far from you,’ when you are living within our land?

Then Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying,“ Why have you deceived us, saying,‘ We are very far from you,’ when you dwell near us?

And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said to them,“ Why did you deceive us by telling us you live far away from us, when in fact you live among us?

And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We[ are] very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said to them,“ Why did you trick us by saying,‘ We live far away from you,’ when you really live nearby?

Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying,“ Why have you deceived us, saying,‘ We are very far from you,’ when you live among us?

When they arrived at the camp of Israel at Gilgal, they told Joshua and the men of Israel,“ We have come from a distant land to ask you to make a peace treaty with us.”

Three days after making the treaty, they learned that these people actually lived nearby!

But when Jacob woke up in the morning— it was Leah!“ What have you done to me?” Jacob raged at Laban.“ I worked seven years for Rachel! Why have you tricked me?”

They answered,“ Your servants have come from a very distant country. We have heard of the might of the Lord your God and of all he did in Egypt.We have also heard what he did to the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan River— King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan( who lived in Ashtaroth).

From that time on, Esau hated Jacob because their father had given Jacob the blessing. And Esau began to scheme:“ I will soon be mourning my father’s death. Then I will kill my brother, Jacob.”But Rebekah heard about Esau’s plans. So she sent for Jacob and told him,“ Listen, Esau is consoling himself by plotting to kill you.So listen carefully, my son. Get ready and flee to my brother, Laban, in Haran.Stay there with him until your brother cools off.When he calms down and forgets what you have done to him, I will send for you to come back. Why should I lose both of you in one day?”

Then the Lord God asked the woman,“ What have you done?”“ The serpent deceived me,” she replied.“ That’s why I ate it.”Then the Lord God said to the serpent,“ Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all animals, domestic and wild. You will crawl on your belly, groveling in the dust as long as you live.

But Isaac said,“ Your brother was here, and he tricked me. He has taken away your blessing.”Esau exclaimed,“ No wonder his name is Jacob, for now he has cheated me twice. First he took my rights as the firstborn, and now he has stolen my blessing. Oh, haven’t you saved even one blessing for me?”

But I fear that somehow your pure and undivided devotion to Christ will be corrupted, just as Eve was deceived by the cunning ways of the serpent.
