示劍居民在山頂上設下埋伏，等候亞比米勒。凡沿着那條路，從他們那裏經過的人，他們就搶劫。有人把這事告訴亞比米勒。

以色列眾人都起來，在巴力‧他瑪擺陣，以色列的伏兵從馬利‧迦巴埋伏的地方衝上前去。

我就說，智慧勝過勇力；然而那貧窮人的智慧被人藐視，他的話也無人聽從。

城內所有的百姓都被召來追趕他們。艾城的人追趕約書亞的時候，就被引誘遠離了城。

萬軍之耶和華如此說：『以色列人從埃及上來的時候，在路上亞瑪力人怎樣待他們，怎樣抵擋他們，我都要懲罰。
