他們開始唱歌讚美的時候，耶和華就派伏兵擊殺前來攻打猶大的亞捫人、摩押人和來自西珥山的人，打敗了他們。

約書亞在當天佔領了瑪基大，把瑪基大王和所有的居民都殺了，一個沒留。他對待瑪基大王跟以前對待耶利哥王一樣。

那時，你們便從埋伏的地方衝出來攻佔艾城，你們的上帝耶和華一定會把艾城交在你們手裡。

豎起旗幟，攻打巴比倫的城牆；要加強防衛，派人巡邏，設下埋伏。因為耶和華言出必行，一定要懲罰巴比倫人。

人生不過是幻影，勞碌奔波卻一場空，積蓄財富卻不知誰來享用。

約書亞選了五千人，讓他們埋伏在艾城和伯特利之間，就是艾城的西面。

忠信的人必大蒙祝福，急於發財的難免受罰。

艾城的王見以色列人兵臨城下，清早便急忙和全城的人起來出城迎戰，在亞拉巴谷附近跟以色列軍交鋒，他不知道城後有伏兵。

但上帝對他說，『無知的人啊！今晚就要取走你的命！你所預備的一切留給誰享用呢？』」耶穌說：「這就是那些只顧為自己積財、在上帝面前卻不富足之人的寫照。」

儘管他堆積的銀子多如塵沙，儲存的衣服高若土堆，但義人將穿他儲存的衣服，清白的人將分他堆積的銀子。

耶羅波安卻在猶大人後面設伏兵，企圖前後夾攻他們。

耶路撒冷王亞多尼·洗德聽說約書亞奪取並毀滅了艾城，像對付耶利哥和耶利哥王一樣對付艾城和艾城的王，又聽說基遍人已經跟以色列人立了盟約，住在他們中間，

以色列人照耶和華對約書亞的吩咐，只帶走了城中的牲畜和財物。約書亞燒毀全城，使城永遠成為一堆廢墟，至今仍一片荒涼。約書亞又將艾城王的屍體掛在樹上示眾。黃昏時，他才吩咐人把屍體取下來丟在城門口，又在屍體上堆了一大堆石頭。石堆至今還在。

他一伸手，城後的伏兵立即行動，迅速衝進城去，一舉佔領艾城，並放火燒城。

謀取不義之財的人就像孵其他鳥蛋的鷓鴣，他中年便會失去不義之財，最後成了愚昧之人。

以色列人在基比亞周圍設下伏兵。第三天，以色列人又像前兩次一樣在基比亞列陣，攻打便雅憫人。便雅憫人前來迎戰，被以色列人誘到城外。他們又像前兩次一樣擊殺以色列人，大約三十名以色列人死在通往基比亞和伯特利的兩條路上。便雅憫人說：「我們又打敗他們了。」但以色列人已經商議好，用詐敗的方法誘敵離城到大路上來。以色列全軍在巴力·他瑪列陣反攻，埋伏在基比亞西面的以色列人也衝了出來。

耶和華對我說，『不要怕他，因為我已把他及其眾民和土地交在你手中，你要像從前對付希實本的亞摩利王西宏一樣對付他。』

於是，約書亞派遣他們出去。他們去埋伏在伯特利和艾城之間，就是艾城的西面。那一夜，約書亞住在民眾當中。

以色列軍在田間和曠野殺盡了追趕他們的艾城人後，又進城殺了留在城裡的人，
