“‘ In the morning, present yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe the Lord chooses shall come forward clan by clan; the clan the Lord chooses shall come forward family by family; and the family the Lord chooses shall come forward man by man.

“‘ In the morning, come forward tribe by tribe. The tribe the Lord chooses will come forward group by group. The group the Lord chooses will come forward family by family. And the men in the family the Lord chooses will come forward one by one.

In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes. And the tribe that the Lord takes by lot shall come near by clans. And the clan that the Lord takes shall come near by households. And the household that the Lord takes shall come near man by man.

抽的籤儘可以拋在人懷裏，定其事卻全是由於永恆主。

大家就彼此說：『來，我們來拈鬮，看這災禍臨到我們、是因誰的緣故。』於是他們就拈鬮，便拈出約拿來。

你們今日卻棄絕了你們的上帝、就是那曾拯救你們脫離一切災禍、跟患難的，而你們卻對他說：「求你立一個王來管理我們。」現在你們要按族派族系都站立在永恆主面前。』於是撒母耳叫以色列眾族派都走近前來，就拈着了便雅憫族派。又叫便雅憫族派按家族走近前來，就拈着了瑪特利家族；又叫瑪特利家族一個人一個人走近前來，就拈着了基士的兒子掃羅；眾人直尋找他，卻找不着。

就禱告說：『主啊，你是知道萬人之心的，求你從這兩人中、指明你所揀選的那位，使他取得這執事職任的地位，就是使徒職分的位置；這位分猶大已經悖棄，往自己的地方去了。』便為他們作鬮；鬮拈中了馬提亞，馬提亞就算和那十一位使徒同列了。

掃羅說：『人民所有的中堅人物啊，你們都要走近前來到這裏，來察知、來看明今天這罪是在哪裏。我指着那拯救以色列的永活永恆主來起誓，即使是我兒子約拿單，他也必須死。』眾民中沒有一個人回答他。掃羅對以色列眾人說：『你們過去在一邊，我和我兒子約拿單過來在一邊』；人民對掃羅說：『你看怎麼好，就怎麼行吧。』掃羅說：『永恆主以色列的上帝啊，你今天為甚麼不回答你僕人呢？這罪孽如果是在我或我兒子約拿單，永恆主以色列的上帝啊，求你給「烏陵」吧；但這罪孽如果是在你人民以色列，那麼、永恆主以色列的上帝啊，求你給「土明」吧。』於是約拿單和掃羅被拈着；人民就出脫無事了。掃羅說：『在我和我兒子約拿單之間、你們再給拈下來吧』；約拿單就被拈着了。

他叫猶大家族走近前來，就拈着了謝拉家族；他叫謝拉家族按着人丁一個一個走近前來，就拈着了撒底；他叫撒底的家室、按着人丁一個一個走近前來，就拈着了亞干：就是屬猶大支派的、謝拉的曾孫、撒底的孫子、迦米的兒子。
