神何曾為自己嘗試從別的國中領出一國的子民來，用考驗、神蹟、奇事、戰爭、大能的手、伸出來的膀臂和大可畏的事，像耶和華－你們的神在埃及，在你們眼前為你們所做的一切事呢？

你們的兒女必在曠野遊牧四十年，擔當你們不信的罪，直到你們的屍體在曠野消滅為止。按你們窺探那地的四十日，一年抵一日，你們要擔當你們的罪孽四十年，你們就知道我疏遠你們了。』

以色列人看見耶和華向埃及人所施展的大能，百姓就敬畏耶和華，並且信服耶和華和他的僕人摩西。

這以色列民的神揀選了我們的祖宗，當百姓寄居埃及的時候抬舉他們，用大能的手領他們從那地出來。他在曠野容忍他們，約有四十年。

你們照着所停留的日子，在加低斯停留了許多日子。」

那時，你們的祖宗試我，探我，並且觀看我的作為。四十年之久，我厭煩那世代，說：「這是心裏迷糊的百姓，竟不知道我的道路！」

白晝你用雲柱引導他們，黑夜你用火柱照亮他們當行的路。你降臨在西奈山，從天上與他們說話，賜給他們正直的典章、真實的律法、美好的律例與誡命，又使他們知道你的聖安息日，並藉你僕人摩西傳給他們誡命、律例、律法。你從天上賜下糧食給他們充飢，使水從磐石流出給他們解渴。你吩咐他們進去，得你起誓應許要賜給他們的地。「『但我們的祖先行事狂傲，硬着頸項不聽從你的誡命。他們不肯順從，也不記念你在他們中間所行的奇事，竟硬着頸項，居心悖逆，自立領袖，要回埃及他們為奴之地。但你是樂意饒恕人，有恩惠，有憐憫，不輕易發怒，有豐盛慈愛的神，並沒有丟棄他們。他們雖然為自己鑄了一頭牛犢，說，這就是領你出埃及的神明，因而犯了褻瀆的大罪，你還是有豐富的憐憫，不把他們丟棄在曠野。白晝，雲柱不離開他們，仍引導他們行路；黑夜，火柱仍照亮他們當行的路。你賜下你良善的靈教導他們，沒有收回嗎哪不給他們吃，仍賜水給他們解渴。在曠野四十年，你養育他們，他們一無所缺，衣服沒有穿破，腳也沒有腫。

神向誰發怒四十年之久呢？豈不是那些犯罪而陳屍在曠野的人嗎？
