神何曾为自己尝试从别的国中领出一国的子民来，用考验、神迹、奇事、战争、大能的手、伸出来的膀臂和大可畏的事，像耶和华—你们的神在埃及，在你们眼前为你们所做的一切事呢？

你们的儿女必在旷野游牧四十年，担当你们不信的罪，直到你们的尸体在旷野消灭为止。按你们窥探那地的四十日，一年抵一日，你们要担当你们的罪孽四十年，你们就知道我疏远你们了。’

以色列人看见耶和华向埃及人所施展的大能，百姓就敬畏耶和华，并且信服耶和华和他的仆人摩西。

这以色列民的神拣选了我们的祖宗，当百姓寄居埃及的时候抬举他们，用大能的手领他们从那地出来。他在旷野容忍他们，约有四十年。

你们照着所停留的日子，在加低斯停留了许多日子。”

那时，你们的祖宗试我，探我，并且观看我的作为。四十年之久，我厌烦那世代，说：“这是心里迷糊的百姓，竟不知道我的道路！”

白昼你用云柱引导他们，黑夜你用火柱照亮他们当行的路。你降临在西奈山，从天上与他们说话，赐给他们正直的典章、真实的律法、美好的律例与诫命，又使他们知道你的圣安息日，并藉你仆人摩西传给他们诫命、律例、律法。你从天上赐下粮食给他们充饥，使水从磐石流出给他们解渴。你吩咐他们进去，得你起誓应许要赐给他们的地。“‘但我们的祖先行事狂傲，硬着颈项不听从你的诫命。他们不肯顺从，也不记念你在他们中间所行的奇事，竟硬着颈项，居心悖逆，自立领袖，要回埃及他们为奴之地。但你是乐意饶恕人，有恩惠，有怜悯，不轻易发怒，有丰盛慈爱的神，并没有丢弃他们。他们虽然为自己铸了一头牛犊，说，这就是领你出埃及的神明，因而犯了亵渎的大罪，你还是有丰富的怜悯，不把他们丢弃在旷野。白昼，云柱不离开他们，仍引导他们行路；黑夜，火柱仍照亮他们当行的路。你赐下你良善的灵教导他们，没有收回吗哪不给他们吃，仍赐水给他们解渴。在旷野四十年，你养育他们，他们一无所缺，衣服没有穿破，脚也没有肿。

神向谁发怒四十年之久呢？岂不是那些犯罪而陈尸在旷野的人吗？
