I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,

屬猶大支派的，耶孚尼的兒子迦勒。

窺探那地的人中，嫩的兒子約書亞和耶孚尼的兒子迦勒撕裂衣服，對以色列全會眾說：「我們所走過、所窺探之地是極美之地。耶和華若喜愛我們，就必領我們進入那地，把這流奶與蜜之地賜給我們。但你們不可背叛耶和華，也不要怕那地的百姓，因為他們是我們的食物。保護他們的已經離開他們，耶和華卻與我們同在。不要怕他們！」當全會眾正說着要拿石頭打死他們的時候，耶和華的榮光在會幕中向以色列眾人顯現。

他們來到巴蘭曠野的加低斯，摩西、亞倫，以及以色列全會眾那裏，向他們和全會眾報告，又把那地的果子給他們看。他們告訴摩西說：「我們到了你派我們去的那地，果然是流奶與蜜之地；這就是那地的果子。但是住那地的百姓很強悍，城鎮又大又堅固，我們也在那裏看見了亞衲族人。亞瑪力人住在尼革夫；赫人、耶布斯人和亞摩利人住在山區；迦南人住在沿海一帶和約旦河旁。」迦勒在摩西面前安撫百姓，說：「我們立刻上去得那地吧！我們必能征服它。」但那些和他同去的人卻說：「我們不能上去攻打那些百姓，因為他們比我們強大。」於是探子中有人向以色列人散佈有關所窺探之地的謠言，說：「我們所走過、所窺探之地是吞沒居民之地，並且我們在那裏所看見的百姓都身材高大。我們在那裏看見巨人，就是巨人中的亞衲族人。我們在自己眼中像蚱蜢一樣，而在他們眼中，我們也確是這樣。」

這些是摩西差派去窺探那地之人的名字。摩西叫嫩的兒子何西阿為約書亞。摩西差派他們去窺探迦南地，對他們說：「你們上到尼革夫那裏，上到山區去，看看那地如何：住那裏的百姓是強是弱，是多是少，他們所住的地是好是壞，所住的城鎮是營地還是堡壘，那地是肥沃還是貧瘠，當中有樹木沒有。你們要放膽，把那地的果子帶些回來。」那時正是葡萄初熟的季節。
