I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,

屬猶大支派的是耶孚尼的兒子迦勒；

窺探那地的人之中、嫩的兒子約書亞和耶孚尼的兒子迦勒、就撕裂衣服，對以色列人全會眾說：『我們所經過而窺探的地、是極其美好之地。永恆主若喜愛我們，他就會領我們進那地、把地賜給我們、就是流奶與蜜之地。只是你們不可背叛永恆主，也不要怕那地的人民，因為他們是我們所可喫的；並且蔭庇他們的已經離開他們，而永恆主卻和我們同在；不要怕他們。』全會眾都說要扔石頭把這二人砍死。永恆主的榮光卻在會棚中向以色列眾人顯現。

來到巴蘭曠野的加低斯、見摩西、亞倫和以色列人全會眾，向他們和全會眾報告，又把那地的果子給他們看。他們向摩西敘說：『我們到了你所打發我們去的那地，果然是流奶與蜜的；這就是它的果子。不過住在那地的人民很壯健、城邑也有堡壘、又極大；我們也看見亞衲人的後代在那裏。有亞瑪力人住在南地；有赫人耶布斯人亞摩利人住在山地；有迦南人住在海邊、和約但河旁。』迦勒在摩西面前叫人民安靜下來、說：『我們立刻上去、取得那地吧！我們足能勝過它。』但是那些和他一同上去的人說：『我們不能上去攻擊那民族，因為他們比我們強壯。』那些探子向以色列人發表他們所窺探之地的惡報告、說：『我們所經過而窺探的地、那是個吞喫居民之地，並且我們所看見的、其中的人民、都是身量高大的人。在那裏我們看見了巨人、亞衲人的子孫、屬於巨人一種的；據我們看、我們正如蚱蜢一樣；據他們看、我們也正如蚱蜢。

以上就是摩西所打發去窺探那地的人的名字。摩西稱嫩的兒子何西亞為約書亞。摩西打發他們去窺探迦南地，對他們說：『你們這就要從這裏取道南地上去，直上山地。看那地怎麼樣，看住在那裏的人民是強壯是軟弱、是少是多，看他們所住的地怎麼樣、是好是歹，看他們所住的城怎麼樣、是營盤、還是堡壘，看那地怎麼樣、是肥沃還是瘠薄，看那裏有沒有樹木。你們要放膽，把那地的果子拿些來。』那時正是葡萄初熟的時候。
