For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

The Lord himself made their people stubborn. He made them go to war against Israel so he could totally destroy them. He wanted to wipe them out. He didn’t show them any mercy. The Lord had commanded Moses to destroy the Canaanites.

For it was the Lord’s doing to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle, in order that they should be devoted to destruction and should receive no mercy but be destroyed, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

For the Lord hardened their hearts and caused them to fight the Israelites. So they were completely destroyed without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

耶和華對摩西說：「你回到埃及去的時候，要留意將我交在你手中的一切奇事行在法老面前。但我要任憑他的心剛硬，他必不放百姓走。

但是這些民族的城鎮，就是耶和華－你神所賜給你的產業，其中凡有氣息的，一個都不可存留。你要照耶和華－你神所吩咐的，將這些赫人、亞摩利人、迦南人、比利洗人、希未人、耶布斯人全都滅絕，

你要吞滅耶和華－你的神交給你的各民族，你的眼目不可顧惜他們。你也不可事奉他們的神明，因為這必成為你的圈套。

約書亞奪了這些王的一切城鎮，擒獲了這些王，用刀殺了他們，把他們完全滅盡，正如耶和華的僕人摩西所吩咐的。至於造在山岡上的城鎮，除了夏瑣以外，以色列人都沒有焚燒。約書亞只焚燒了夏瑣。從那些城鎮所奪的財物和牲畜，以色列人都取為自己的掠物。至於所有的人，他們都用刀殺了，直到滅盡；凡有氣息的，沒有留下一個。耶和華怎樣吩咐他的僕人摩西，摩西就這樣吩咐約書亞，約書亞也照樣做了。凡耶和華所吩咐摩西的，約書亞沒有一件偏離不做的。

倘若神要顯明他的憤怒，彰顯他的權能，難道不可多多忍耐寬容那應受憤怒、預備遭毀滅的器皿嗎？這是為了要把他豐盛的榮耀彰顯在那蒙憐憫、早預備得榮耀的器皿上。

然而，我讓你存活，是為了要使你看見我的大能，並要使我的名傳遍全地。

但希實本王西宏不肯讓我們從他那裏經過，因為耶和華－你的神使他性情頑梗，內心剛硬，為要把他交在你手中，像今日一樣。

看哪，我要任憑埃及人的心剛硬，他們就跟着下去。我要在法老和他的全軍、戰車、戰車長身上得榮耀。

他的父母並不知道這事是出於耶和華，因為他在找機會攻擊非利士人。那時，非利士人轄制以色列人。

他說：「你去告訴這百姓說：『你們聽了又聽，卻不明白；看了又看，卻不曉得。』要使這百姓心蒙油脂，耳朵發沉，眼睛昏花；恐怕他們眼睛看見，耳朵聽見，心裏明白，回轉過來，就得醫治。」

耶和華說：『誰去引誘亞哈上基列的拉末去陣亡呢？』這個這樣說，那個那樣說。隨後有一個靈出來，站在耶和華面前，說：『我去引誘他。』耶和華問他：『用甚麼方法呢？』他說：『我要出去，在他眾先知的口中成為謊言的靈。』耶和華說：『這樣，你去引誘他，必能成功。你出去，照樣做吧！』現在，看哪，耶和華使謊言的靈入了你所有的這些先知的口，並且耶和華已經宣告要降禍於你。」

先知與王說話的時候，王對他說：「難道我們立你作王的謀士嗎？你住口吧！為何要挨打呢？」先知就止住了，卻說：「我知道神已定意要消滅你，因為你行這事，不聽從我的勸戒。」

人若得罪人，有神可以裁決；人若得罪耶和華，誰能為他代求呢？」然而他們還是不聽父親的話，因為耶和華想要他們死。

王不依從百姓，因這事件是出於耶和華，為要應驗耶和華藉示羅人亞希雅對尼八的兒子耶羅波安所說的話。
