For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

The Lord himself made their people stubborn. He made them go to war against Israel so he could totally destroy them. He wanted to wipe them out. He didn’t show them any mercy. The Lord had commanded Moses to destroy the Canaanites.

For it was the Lord’s doing to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle, in order that they should be devoted to destruction and should receive no mercy but be destroyed, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

爾上帝耶和華所付爾之民、必翦滅之、勿加顧惜、勿事其神、蓋為爾之坎阱、○

約書亞取斯諸邑與其王、刃擊其眾、而翦滅之、循耶和華僕摩西所命、建於山岡之邑、以色列人不焚、惟夏瑣為約書亞所燬、諸邑貨財牲畜、以色列人取而歸己、人則以刃擊之、至於盡滅、凡有氣息者、靡有孑遺、昔耶和華所命其僕摩西、摩西傳命約書亞者、約書亞悉遵行之、一無所違、○

若上帝欲彰其怒、示其能、以恆忍包容可怒之器、備以毀敗者、且欲示其豐富之榮於矜恤之器、備以獲榮者、

然我之立爾、實欲顯我能於爾、且揚我名於天下、

乃希實本王西宏、不容我過其境、蓋爾上帝耶和華使其心志頑梗、致付爾手、有如今日、

我必使埃及人剛愎厥心、追入於海、我將因法老、及其軍旅車騎而獲榮焉、

其父母不知斯事由於耶和華、參孫尋釁、欲攻非利士人、是時非利士人轄以色列人、

曰、往告斯民云、爾其聽之而不悟、視之而不明、使斯民心頑、耳聾、目瞶、免以目視、耳聽、心悟、轉移而得醫焉、

耶和華曰、誰願誘亞哈往基列拉末、而隕沒乎、其一曰如此、其一曰如彼、後有神出、立於耶和華前曰、我願誘之、曰、何以誘之、曰、我將出為誑言之神、在其眾先知之口、曰、爾往為之、必成其事、今耶和華以誑言之神、置爾眾先知之口、耶和華有言、將加禍於爾、

先知與王言時、王曰、我儕豈立爾為王之謀士、爾休矣、何為見撻、先知乃止、既而曰、我知上帝決意滅爾、因爾行此、不聽我勸戒也、○

人若相犯、上帝鞫之、若犯耶和華、誰為之祈、惟二子不聽父言、蓋耶和華決意殺之、

王不聽民所求、是事由於耶和華、以應耶和華藉示羅人亞希雅、告尼八子耶羅波安之言、
