基遍居民、聞約書亞伐耶利哥及埃、乃設詭計、自裹餱糧、負敝囊於驢、其酒囊乃舊革、裂而復彌縫者、其所履者敝而復補、所衣者敝衣、所有之糧、乾而朽、至吉甲營、見約書亞以色列族曰、我儕自遠方來、請與立約。以色列族謂自基遍來之希未人、曰、恐爾居處離我不遠、焉能與爾立約。曰、我儕願為爾僕。約書亞曰、爾曹何人、奚自。對曰、僕所自來、其地甚遠、我儕聞爾上帝耶和華之名、知其所行於埃及、亦伐約但東、二亞摩哩王、即希實本王西宏、及都亞大綠之巴山王噩、故我長老與居民告我曰、爾裹餱糧、往見以色列族、願為其僕、請與立約。我起程時、而裹餱糧、此餅尚熱、今乾而朽、革囊維新、俱盛以酒、今囊已裂、因路之遠、衣履悉敝。以色列族惟視其糧、不諮諏耶和華。約書亞與基遍人修好立約、以存其生。會長加以誓。約後三日、則知基遍人、與以色列族鄰近。以色列族遄征、越至三日則詣其邑、即基遍、基非拉庇綠基列耶林。會長既指以色列族上帝耶和華而誓、故不擊之、會眾怨會長。會長告眾曰、我儕已指以色列族上帝耶和華而誓、故不可害斯人。既與盟約必存其生、否則干上帝之怒。又曰、可存其生、使為採樵者、汲水者、服事會眾、以踐前約。約書亞召基遍人曰、爾之居處鄰近於我、曷欺我、言來自遠方乎。是故爾曹服咒詛、俱必為奴、採樵汲水、俾供我上帝室之用、對曰、有告我云、爾之上帝、耶和華曾諭其僕摩西使滅斯土之民、以地給爾、故我甚畏、以命難保、遂行是事。權在爾手、爾以為善、則行之。於是約書亞救基遍人出以色列人手、不至殺戮、惟使採樵汲水、服事會眾、以備耶和華祭壇之用、在其所簡為室之所、越至今日、尚為是事。
