Now Adoni- Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with Israel and had become their allies.

Adoni- Zedek was the king of Jerusalem. He heard that Joshua had captured Ai. He found out that the city had been set apart to the Lord in a special way to be destroyed. He heard that Joshua had done to Ai and its king the same thing he had done to Jericho and its king. Adoni- Zedek heard that the people of Gibeon had made a peace treaty with Israel. He also found out that they were living among the Israelites.

As soon as Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,

盡滅所有、戮男女老幼、牛羊與驢。

撒冷王麥基洗德為至高上帝之祭司、挈餅與酒而出、

邑中之兵齊出、埃人被以色列族前後夾攻、為所殺戮、靡有孑遺。生擒埃王、解至約書亞。埃之居民、追以色列族、至於田野、反為以色列族殺戮、俱死以刃、淪胥以亡、後以色列族至埃邑、盡滅所有。是日埃民俱亡、男女一萬二千人。蓋約書亞執戟指埃、不垂其手、待埃民盡滅。惟邑之貨財牲畜、以色列族取之、循耶和華所諭約書亞之命。約書亞爇埃、使為瓦礫、今日之事為證。懸埃王於木、至於終日。日沒時、約書亞命取尸下木、投於邑門、壘石為岡、至今尚存。○

昔爾待耶利哥與其王、今之待埃與其王、亦必若是。惟其貨財牲畜、為爾所得、當伏兵於邑後。

自希未人基遍民而外、與以色列族修好者、無一邑焉、俱戰而得之。蓋斯眾剛愎厥心、耶和華聽其然、使與以色列族戰、而被翦滅、無少姑縱、循耶和華諭摩西之命。○

約書亞與基遍人修好立約、以存其生。會長加以誓。約後三日、則知基遍人、與以色列族鄰近。以色列族遄征、越至三日則詣其邑、即基遍、基非拉庇綠基列耶林。會長既指以色列族上帝耶和華而誓、故不擊之、會眾怨會長。會長告眾曰、我儕已指以色列族上帝耶和華而誓、故不可害斯人。既與盟約必存其生、否則干上帝之怒。又曰、可存其生、使為採樵者、汲水者、服事會眾、以踐前約。約書亞召基遍人曰、爾之居處鄰近於我、曷欺我、言來自遠方乎。是故爾曹服咒詛、俱必為奴、採樵汲水、俾供我上帝室之用、對曰、有告我云、爾之上帝、耶和華曾諭其僕摩西使滅斯土之民、以地給爾、故我甚畏、以命難保、遂行是事。權在爾手、爾以為善、則行之。於是約書亞救基遍人出以色列人手、不至殺戮、惟使採樵汲水、服事會眾、以備耶和華祭壇之用、在其所簡為室之所、越至今日、尚為是事。
