When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

亞哈聽了以利亞的話，就撕裂衣服，披麻禁食，睡覺也不脫下麻衣，垂頭喪氣地走來走去。耶和華對提斯比人以利亞說：「你看見亞哈在我面前如何痛悔了嗎？因為他在我面前痛悔，我不會在他有生之日降災，我要等他兒子執政的時候，才降災給他家。」

於是，耶和華心生憐憫，說：「我不降這災了。」

他會當眾歌唱說，『我犯了罪，顛倒是非，祂卻沒有按我的罪報應我。祂救贖我的靈魂，使之免下深坑，使我的生命得見光明。』

我聽見以法蓮在為自己悲歎，『我們就像未經馴服的牛犢，你管教我們，使我們順服，求你使我們回到你身邊，重新復興，因為你是我們的上帝耶和華。我們曾經離開你，但我們後悔了；我們醒悟之後捶胸頓足，痛悔不已，因早年的所作所為而羞愧難當。』」耶和華說：「以法蓮不是我的愛子嗎？他不是我喜悅的孩子嗎？我雖然常常責備他，但仍然惦記著他。我深深地想念他，我必憐憫他。

你們要撕心般地悔改，而不是撕裂衣服。歸向你們的上帝耶和華吧，因為祂有恩典和憐憫，不輕易發怒，有無限的慈愛，不忍心降災禍。

「在審判的日子，尼尼微人和這世代的人都要起來，尼尼微人要定這個世代的罪，因為他們聽到約拿的宣告，就悔改了。看啊！這裡有一位比約拿更偉大。

於是他動身回家。「他父親遠遠地看見他，就動了慈心，跑上前去抱著他連連親吻。

他向耶和華禱告說：「耶和華啊，我在家鄉的時候豈不早就說過你會這樣做嗎？我知道你是一位有恩典、有憐憫的上帝，不輕易發怒，充滿慈愛，不忍心降災，所以我才急速逃往他施。
