But Egypt will be deserted. Edom will become a dry and empty desert. They did terrible harm to the people of Judah. My people were not guilty of doing anything wrong. But Egypt and Edom spilled their blood anyway.

Every sown field along the Nile will become parched, will blow away and be no more.The fishermen will groan and lament, all who cast hooks into the Nile; those who throw nets on the water will pine away.Those who work with combed flax will despair, the weavers of fine linen will lose hope.The workers in cloth will be dejected, and all the wage earners will be sick at heart.The officials of Zoan are nothing but fools; the wise counselors of Pharaoh give senseless advice. How can you say to Pharaoh,“ I am one of the wise men, a disciple of the ancient kings”?Where are your wise men now? Let them show you and make known what the Lord Almighty has planned against Egypt.The officials of Zoan have become fools, the leaders of Memphis are deceived; the cornerstones of her peoples have led Egypt astray.The Lord has poured into them a spirit of dizziness; they make Egypt stagger in all that she does, as a drunkard staggers around in his vomit.There is nothing Egypt can do— head or tail, palm branch or reed. God will stretch out over Edom the measuring line of chaos and the plumb line of desolation.Her nobles will have nothing there to be called a kingdom, all her princes will vanish away.Thorns will overrun her citadels, nettles and brambles her strongholds. She will become a haunt for jackals, a home for owls.Desert creatures will meet with hyenas, and wild goats will bleat to each other; there the night creatures will also lie down and find for themselves places of rest.The owl will nest there and lay eggs, she will hatch them, and care for her young under the shadow of her wings; there also the falcons will gather, each with its mate.Look in the scroll of the Lord and read: None of these will be missing, not one will lack her mate. Then you will know that I am the Lord.For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you have clapped your hands and stamped your feet, rejoicing with all the malice of your heart against the land of Israel,therefore I will stretch out my hand against you and give you as plunder to the nations. I will wipe you out from among the nations and exterminate you from the countries. I will destroy you, and you will know that I am the Lord.’”“ This is what the Sovereign Lord says:‘ Because Moab and Seir said,“ Look, Judah has become like all the other nations,”therefore I will expose the flank of Moab, beginning at its frontier towns— Beth Jeshimoth, Baal Meon and Kiriathaim— the glory of that land.I will give Moab along with the Ammonites to the people of the East as a possession, so that the Ammonites will not be remembered among the nations;and I will inflict punishment on Moab. Then they will know that I am the Lord.’”“ This is what the Sovereign Lord says:‘ Because Edom took revenge on Judah and became very guilty by doing so,therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will stretch out my hand against Edom and kill both man and beast. I will lay it waste, and from Teman to Dedan they will fall by the sword.I will take vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom in accordance with my anger and my wrath; they will know my vengeance, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”“ This is what the Sovereign Lord says:‘ Because the Philistines acted in vengeance and took revenge with malice in their hearts, and with ancient hostility sought to destroy Judah,therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am about to stretch out my hand against the Philistines, and I will wipe out the Kerethites and destroy those remaining along the coast.I will carry out great vengeance on them and punish them in my wrath. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I take vengeance on them.’” (niv)

Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame; you will be destroyed forever.On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them.You should not gloat over your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble.You should not march through the gates of my people in the day of their disaster, nor gloat over them in their calamity in the day of their disaster, nor seize their wealth in the day of their disaster.You should not wait at the crossroads to cut down their fugitives, nor hand over their survivors in the day of their trouble.“ The day of the Lord is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.Just as you drank on my holy hill, so all the nations will drink continually; they will drink and drink and be as if they had never been. Rejoice and be glad, Daughter Edom, you who live in the land of Uz. But to you also the cup will be passed; you will be drunk and stripped naked. (niv)

Remember, Lord, what the Edomites did on the day Jerusalem fell.“ Tear it down,” they cried,“ tear it down to its foundations!” (niv)

Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson? Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of his strength?“ It is I, proclaiming victory, mighty to save.”Why are your garments red, like those of one treading the winepress?“ I have trodden the winepress alone; from the nations no one was with me. I trampled them in my anger and trod them down in my wrath; their blood spattered my garments, and I stained all my clothing.It was for me the day of vengeance; the year for me to redeem had come.I looked, but there was no one to help, I was appalled that no one gave support; so my own arm achieved salvation for me, and my own wrath sustained me.I trampled the nations in my anger; in my wrath I made them drunk and poured their blood on the ground.” (niv)

“ Edom will become an object of horror; all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff because of all its wounds. (niv)

This is what the Lord says:“ For three sins of Edom, even for four, I will not relent. Because he pursued his brother with a sword and slaughtered the women of the land, because his anger raged continually and his fury flamed unchecked,I will send fire on Teman that will consume the fortresses of Bozrah.” (niv)

If the Egyptian people do not go up and take part, they will have no rain. The Lord will bring on them the plague he inflicts on the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.This will be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles. (niv)

The Lord will dry up the gulf of the Egyptian sea; with a scorching wind he will sweep his hand over the Euphrates River. He will break it up into seven streams so that anyone can cross over in sandals. (niv)
