Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine; wail because of the new wine, for it has been snatched from your lips.

Get up and weep, you people who drink too much! Cry, all you who drink wine! Cry because the fresh wine has been taken away from you.

Awake, you drunkards, and weep, and wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine, for it is cut off from your mouth.

The new wine dries up, the vines shrivel up, all those who like to celebrate groan.The happy sound of the tambourines stops, the revelry of those who celebrate comes to a halt, the happy sound of the harp ceases.They no longer sing and drink wine; the beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.The ruined town is shattered; all of the houses are shut up tight.They howl in the streets because of what happened to the wine; all joy turns to sorrow; celebrations disappear from the earth.

In a year’s time you carefree ones will shake with fear, for the grape harvest will fail, and the fruit harvest will not arrive.Tremble, you complacent ones! Shake with fear, you carefree ones! Strip off your clothes and expose yourselves– put sackcloth on your waist!Mourn over the field, over the delightful fields and the fruitful vine!

“ But be on your guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day close down upon you suddenly like a trap.For it will overtake all who live on the face of the whole earth.But stay alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that must happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Come now, you rich! Weep and cry aloud over the miseries that are coming on you.

“ Son of man, prophesy and say,‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says:“‘ Wail,“ Alas, the day is here!”

You refuse to believe a day of disaster will come, but you establish a reign of violence.They lie around on beds decorated with ivory, and sprawl out on their couches. They eat lambs from the flock, and calves from the middle of the pen.They sing to the tune of stringed instruments; like David they invent musical instruments.They drink wine from sacrificial bowls, and pour the very best oils on themselves. Yet they are not concerned over the ruin of Joseph.Therefore they will now be the first to go into exile, and the religious banquets where they sprawl on couches will end.

“ There was a rich man who dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.

And do this because we know the time, that it is already the hour for us to awake from sleep, for our salvation is now nearer than when we became believers.The night has advanced toward dawn; the day is near. So then we must lay aside the works of darkness, and put on the weapons of light.Let us live decently as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in discord and jealousy.Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to arouse its desires.

So put on sackcloth! Mourn and wail, saying,‘ The fierce anger of the LORD has not turned away from us!’”

and they cast lots for my people. They traded a boy for a prostitute; they sold a little girl for wine so they could drink.

Get dressed and lament, you priests! Wail, you who minister at the altar! Come, spend the night in sackcloth, you servants of my God, because no one brings grain offerings or drink offerings to the temple of your God anymore.

And in hell, as he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far off with Lazarus at his side.So he called out,‘ Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in anguish in this fire.’But Abraham said,‘ Child, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things and Lazarus likewise bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in anguish.

Be distressed, farmers; wail, vinedressers, over the wheat and the barley. For the harvest of the field has perished.
