because I stood in great fear of the multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and did not go out of doors—

如我若此、則必戰慄於眾前、為戚族所藐視、緘口無詞、杜門不出。

如我有此、自思大眾必驚恐我、宗族必藐視我、凌辱我、使我蒙羞緘口、不敢出門、

because I so feared the crowd and so dreaded the contempt of the clans that I kept silent and would not go outside—

I was never afraid of the crowd. I never worried that my relatives might hate me. I didn’t have to keep quiet or stay inside.

Have I feared the crowd or the contempt of the masses, so that I kept quiet and stayed indoors?

because I greatly feared the crowds and because the contempt of the clans terrified me, so I grew silent and would not go outside?

You shall not fall in with the many to do evil, nor shall you bear witness in a lawsuit, siding with the many, so as to pervert justice,

Then King Zedekiah swore secretly to Jeremiah,“ As the Lord lives, who made our souls, I will not put you to death or deliver you into the hand of these men who seek your life.”

Therefore because you trample on the poor and you exact taxes of grain from him, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.For I know how many are your transgressions and how great are your sins— you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and turn aside the needy in the gate.Therefore he who is prudent will keep silent in such a time, for it is an evil time.

And one of the sons of Jehoiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I chased him from me.

The man with power possessed the land, and the favored man lived in it.

Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.The governor again said to them,“ Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said,“ Barabbas.”Pilate said to them,“ Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said,“ Let him be crucified!”And he said,“ Why? what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more,“ Let him be crucified!”So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying,“ I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to it yourselves.”And all the people answered,“ His blood be on us and on our children!”Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer.

Then the officials said to the king,“ Let this man be put to death, for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm.”King Zedekiah said,“ Behold, he is in your hands, for the king can do nothing against you.”

And he said to them,“ Thus says the Lord God of Israel,‘ Put your sword on your side each of you, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and each of you kill his brother and his companion and his neighbor.’”

Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, and who was related to Tobiah,prepared for Tobiah a large chamber where they had previously put the grain offering, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of grain, wine, and oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests.While this was taking place, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king. And after some time I asked leave of the kingand came to Jerusalem, and I then discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.And I was very angry, and I threw all the household furniture of Tobiah out of the chamber.

King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah,“ I am afraid of the Judeans who have deserted to the Chaldeans, lest I be handed over to them and they deal cruelly with me.”

The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.

“ All the king’s servants and the people of the king’s provinces know that if any man or woman goes to the king inside the inner court without being called, there is but one law— to be put to death, except the one to whom the king holds out the golden scepter so that he may live. But as for me, I have not been called to come in to the king these thirty days.”

who shows no partiality to princes, nor regards the rich more than the poor, for they are all the work of his hands?

Their hands are on what is evil, to do it well; the prince and the judge ask for a bribe, and the great man utters the evil desire of his soul; thus they weave it together.

I took counsel with myself, and I brought charges against the nobles and the officials. I said to them,“ You are exacting interest, each from his brother.” And I held a great assembly against them

Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.If you say,“ Behold, we did not know this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work?

For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
