because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist them.

That’s because I saved poor people who cried out for help. I saved helpless children whose fathers had died.

For I assisted the poor in their need and the orphans who required help.

For He will deliver the needy when he cries, The poor also, and him who has no helper.

Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor Will also cry himself and not be heard.

A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, Is God in His holy habitation.

He administers justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing.

“ You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child.If you afflict them in any way, and they cry at all to Me, I will surely hear their cry;and My wrath will become hot, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

If I have raised my hand against the fatherless, When I saw I had help in the gate;

Is not your wickedness great, And your iniquity without end?For you have taken pledges from your brother for no reason, And stripped the naked of their clothing.You have not given the weary water to drink, And you have withheld bread from the hungry.But the mighty man possessed the land, And the honorable man dwelt in it.You have sent widows away empty, And the strength of the fatherless was crushed.

They push the needy off the road; All the poor of the land are forced to hide.

Or eaten my morsel by myself, So that the fatherless could not eat of it

For there were those who said,“ We, our sons, and our daughters are many; therefore let us get grain, that we may eat and live.”There were also some who said,“ We have mortgaged our lands and vineyards and houses, that we might buy grain because of the famine.”There were also those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our lands and vineyards.Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and indeed we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have been brought into slavery. It is not in our power to redeem them, for other men have our lands and vineyards.”And I became very angry when I heard their outcry and these words.After serious thought, I rebuked the nobles and rulers, and said to them,“ Each of you is exacting usury from his brother.” So I called a great assembly against them.And I said to them,“ According to our ability we have redeemed our Jewish brethren who were sold to the nations. Now indeed, will you even sell your brethren? Or should they be sold to us?” Then they were silenced and found nothing to say.Then I said,“ What you are doing is not good. Should you not walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the nations, our enemies?I also, with my brethren and my servants, am lending them money and grain. Please, let us stop this usury!Restore now to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, also a hundredth of the money and the grain, the new wine and the oil, that you have charged them.”So they said,“ We will restore it, and will require nothing from them; we will do as you say.” Then I called the priests, and required an oath from them that they would do according to this promise.Then I shook out the fold of my garment and said,“ So may God shake out each man from his house, and from his property, who does not perform this promise. Even thus may he be shaken out and emptied.” And all the assembly said,“ Amen!” and praised the Lord. Then the people did according to this promise.

He judged the cause of the poor and needy; Then it was well. Was not this knowing Me?” says the Lord.

How long will you judge unjustly, And show partiality to the wicked? SelahDefend the poor and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and needy.Deliver the poor and needy; Free them from the hand of the wicked.

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

Deliver those who are drawn toward death, And hold back those stumbling to the slaughter.If you say,“ Surely we did not know this,” Does not He who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, does He not know it? And will He not render to each man according to his deeds?
